We all know that this has been a wild spring, not only here in Chicago but also in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.
So many of the towns in northern Wisconsin are changing. You’ll see the McDonald’s, Burger King’s and other fast food restaurants were years ago there were only small diners and supper clubs. The Land O Lakes area is not neglecting to accommodate modern day vacationers. But yet it’s still the home of a country store, much to the likes we remember visiting years ago to find food, beverages, bait, gas, and more.
I just received my April issue of the Forest Lake Country Store’s Northwoods Newletter. So before breakfast today, I enjoyed my first cup of coffee and caught up on what’s happening up north right now. Two months and county, I’ll be back in Vilas County for some great spring fishing.
Forest Lake Country Store, Great food and a whole lot more,,,,
April 2012 News
Winter Closure will start on March 26th and we will re-open on Wednesday April 25th.
Surprise, surprise, surprise! Nope, Gomer didn’t move to Land O’ lakes, but summer made a Cameo appearance. Temps in the mid to high 70’s for almost a week. The first day of spring we are generally up to our belt loops in snow. This year the ice left even the big deep lakes like Black Oak and Forest Lake on Tuesday, the first day of spring. No sneaking in for summer, we did not even slow down for spring. We went from two feet of snow in a single snow storm, to 50’s then 70’s. The only evidence of snow is in heavily shaded areas on north slopes or where the plows may have toiled all winter and left a pile.
So many seasonal residents have showed up to check out their cabins. Most driveways are clear and cabins are easily accessible. If you want to get some lawn work, spring cleaning done early get up here now. We rarely have a chance to get a jump on spring chores. If you had a project that you wanted completed before the family comes up for Memorial Day call your caretaker or contractor soon. If you want to come up but do not want to open your cabin call the Gateway Hotel. I saw an ad with some outstanding April rates. Use their roof and water and enjoy a day or three around the cabin!
We know we will get a little more winter, but this is a real treat while it lasts!

Land O’ Lakes Artisans /Artistree Events
On Saturday, March 10th, the Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans, Inc. /LOLA held an artist reception for the 3rd Annual “What Will Kids Imagine Next?” Exhibit. The day was a huge success! Many kids, parents, and grandparents came to see the artwork of 57 students which was framed by volunteers and displayed in the Artistree gallery. Land O’ Lakes Elementary Principal, Scott Foster, and art teacher, Amanda Acklam, were in attendance as well.
National Youth Art Month is about fostering creative thinking and celebrating artistic expression—a perfect fit with LOLA’s motto: Create. Share. Repeat. All the young artists will get to keep their framed work. “It is always a pleasure for LOLA to work with Amanda Acklam and the students. The creativity of the children always exceeds our expectations,” observed Barb LeMoine, LOLA Vice President.
The framing of the artwork for the exhibit was possible due to support from the Sandra Hardy Brown Memorial Fund. This fund was established to promote children’s art projects and programming and other arts educational needs. LOLA is grateful and honored to be the overseers of this endowment.
There is still time to enjoy the What Will Kids Imagine Next? Exhibit at LOLA at 4262 County Road B in Land O Lakes. The show remains open Wednesday-Saturday, 10AM-4PM, through March 24th.
LOLA is a 501 ( c ) (3) nonprofit organization. Donations are always tax deductible and any support would be greatly appreciated. Contact Wendy for information at 715-547-3950 or 715-493-5361.
