Forest Lake Country Store
Great food and a whole lot more…
I can’t wait. I’m one month away from heading back up to the Northwoods of Wisconsin. This time I’m bringing my daughter Lisa. She hasn’t been up north in years and she too is quite anxious to be up there. We’re going to do some muskie fishing, maybe go for some bass and walleye too. One thing that’s on our TO DO list is visiting the Forest Lake Country Store. She’s heard me talk and write about it so much she can’t wait to meet Mark and Kris.
I just received the September Newsletter from the FLCS. Great news as usual from the Northwoods. I hope you enjoy it too.
September 2011Forest Lake Country Store Newsletter
Remember, after Labor Day we end 100 hour work weeks and return to a normal work week. We will be open 7 AM – 8 PM Friday and Saturdays, 7 AM – 2 PM Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. We will be closed on Tuesdays, starting with the Tuesday after Labor Day. We will also close at 4 PM on September 17th for a private event.
The shorter hour means a big increase in Take-N-Bake Pizza orders. Customers pick up a par baked pizza and cook it at home later in the evening. Ask us to build you a Take-N-Bake!
The only thing that stays the same in the north woods is that things are always changing. Everything is always changing. For some, change can be disturbing, for others it is exhilarating. The woods are changing. Some of the ferns have a tinge of brown on their edges; ever so slightly the edges curl and get brown. A few maples show a little yellow or splotches of ruby on stray leaves. Not a lot, but a few stressed trees are starting to look like fall.
We see the customers change. Schools are starting and we see fewer families with youngsters now, but many retirees’ look at this as a perfect travel time with less traffic on the north woods roads.
The deer are changing. We have triplet fawns hanging around our yard. Each time we see them the spots are fading, shrinking and the fawns slowly resemble miniature versions of their mother.
We see change with the anglers. Earlier in summer boats are filled with slip bobber rods and small life jackets, but now we see the large hoops of the musky anglers sticking over the gunwales of the boats.
And one of the saddest changes is seasonal residents stopping in to say goodbye until next spring. They are pulling piers and putting their boats away. Getting ready to head to their winter homes starts now and ends before snow flies. The seasonal residents are like extended family. The good byes are the hardest part of fall.
Almost as hard is our seasonal staff that is leaving us. Cameron left a couple weeks ago, Becca leaves next week. The tips that our customers graciously leave behind are used to pay tuition, books and more for some of the lucky youths in Land O’ Lakes. We will miss these young adults that work hard to set our store apart.
New in the Store
On the Jam rack is Tomato Jam. It is as good as it is interesting. On a piece of warm toast it is incredible. Half pint bottles will not last long at home!
In the soda cooler you will find Doc 360. This is a new product from Pepsi designed to compete with Dr. Pepper. It is a great soft drink and customers are enjoying it already. Doc 360 is available in regular and diet!
On the shelves we have added Sprecher BEER flavored Kettle Chips. Crisp and crunchy with a hint of beer. A great snack to enjoy with a Packer Game! We sell these in 9 ounce bags and a 1.75 ounce snack size bag.
In the beer cooler we continue our quest to find new items. Look for 4 varieties of beers from both Sierra Nevada (Torpedo, Pale Ale, Tumbler, and Porter) and 4 from Tyranena (Bitter Woman, Headless Man, Rocky’s Revenge and Chief Blackhawk Porter). Oktoberfest is in from Sprecher and Leinenkugels, and we have added Oarsman Ale from Bells Brewing. On a side note, we are back in stock on Two Hearted Ale from Bells Brewing after a factory shortage. Last we received some one pint aluminum bottles of Miller Lite with the Green and Gold Packer look. Quantities are limited. Stop in and pick some up for the first Packer game of the season!
On the wine rack we added a new line of Italian wines from Cavitt. It is called Alta Luna and includes Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir and Phases a red blend. Continuing in our search for wines that drink better than they cost, these three wines fit the bill. You’ll think you’re drinking much more expensive wines!
Starting this week, until the inventory is reduced, we will offer 25% off on all of our Forest Lake Country Store clothing. We have T shirts, long sleeve T shirts; pull over hoodie sweatshirts, track jackets and more. Color and sizes are limited to quantities on hand; stop in soon for the best selection.
We are also loading slow moving beers and wines on a rack at the end of the wine aisle. All items are clearance priced to move fast.
There are two great opportunities to buy wine for the holidays.
The first is the popular 14 Hands brand from Washington State. There are four varietals available: Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. All 4 are absolutely impeccable wines. Normally these wine sell for about $12 off the shelf and are very easy to find over $20 on restaurant wine lists. We are offering a one-time buy at just $8.99 per bottle in full case quantities of 12 bottles. This is an exceptional end of summer value on these great wines.
The second value is the Trinity Oaks brand of California wines. There are two wines available; a Pinot Grigio and a Pinot Noir. We have used these wines every year for our flyers and they continue to surprise us as to how much we can sell. These are case priced at just $5.99 per bottle! There are 12 bottles in a case.
We will need your orders for either special by Sunday August 28th and the product will arrive in the store on Wednesday August 31st, in time for your Labor Day entertainment plans. Replies via Email are best.

Meet the Author, Tom Stenklyft
Book: The House that Billie Built
Tom Stenklyft has been vacationing on Big Portage Lake for many years at the cottage that has been in his wife’s family (Hernke) since 1965.
Billie Pollard began some of the best work of her life at age 60. She retired from teaching in 1974 when the first Southeast Asian refugees were coming to the Fox Cities. Nobody in the area knew how to teach English to the foreign born. Billie accepted the challenge to create a literacy program from scratch: Literacy Education Services, Inc. Today, at age 97, the organization she founded continues to prosper under a new generation of volunteers, and additional organizations have also stepped in to carry forward and expand upon her pioneering work.

This has been our best summer since owning the store. We appreciate the hard effort of our staff to make every meal, stock the shelves and every other job behind the scenes to make our little business go. We also thank every customer that has come in and trusted us with a meal, helping choose a bottle of wine or a new beer, or letting us explain a new jam, salsa or some other new item.
We look forward to the shorter hours of the fall and having a little time to re-energize our batteries, plan new menu choices, and find new things to add to our selection.
Thanks again, for every opportunity you give us, to offer you great food and a whole lot more,,,
