News from Land O Lakes Wisconsin

Usually I’ll read the latest edition of the Forest Lake Country Store Newsletter while having a morning cup of coffee.  Well, today, I got to the northwoods news after dinner.

I visited Mark Gostisha last week.  My wife Judy and I along with Jeff and Jan Novak and their son Joe stopped in and had some of the best Northwoods pizza around.  I must admit though that it was a lot like good ole Chicago pizza.

After lunch, Jeff, Joe and I were going to fish a nearby lake for an hour but after talking with Mark, we decided to fish Forest Lake which is across Highway B.  What a great smallmouth lake.  Let me share a couple photos of fish we got in just one hour.  Check out the slide show…..  then see what’s going on up north.

Forest Lake Country Store –  Great Food and a Whole Lot More…

July 2010

Summer.  A bewitching time of the north woods year.  Now the ferns are as high as your hips.  The trees limbs are so heavy with leaves they sag; almost to the tops of the ferns.  The deep green color of spruce and balsam trees are accented with a lime green tint of new growth.   The trees are so dense with new growth you can hardly see into the woods.  Take a hike, or bike, or paddle along a lake.  One second you smell the ever present odor of the pines.  Move around a little and you can almost taste earthen smell of the damp forest floor.  A short time outdoors puts you into sensory vertigo.

Fishing, finally, has gotten good and somewhat predictable.  Bruce Becker, one of the local guides is reporting catches of giant walleyes.  On Saturday (6/19) his guide clients had  28″, 29″, 30″ and 31-½” walleyes!  Spotted fawns are being spotted in back yards (pun intended).  There was talk of twin loon chicks on one local lake.  And the sun comes up early and hangs around forever this time of year giving you ample time to enjoy the world.  Get up here and enjoy the gift of a beautiful summer.
New in the Store

From Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream we are phasing in new flavors in pints.  Chocolate Shoppe has not introduced any news flavors, in the take home pints, since we purchased the store in 2006.  The first new pint flavor we have received is Ultimate Oreo.  Soon there will be Espresso Oreo, Strawberry Cheesecake and Caramel Chaos.  Watch the pint freezer, in the front of the store, for new flavor releases.

Sprecher Beer delivered Mbege, an African style beer.  This is also a Gluten Free beer.  When you try this you will notice a hint of banana flavor.  When we read that, it almost stopped us from trying it. We opened a bottle and shared it with a few customers.  Consensus was,,, it is a great beer!  Especially nice on a hot summer afternoon.  This brings our Gluten Free beer selection to three choices!  It also gives us 14 choices of Sprecher beers and seven different Sprecher sodas.

In the cracker department we increased our selection of the Mediterranean Crackers.  We have the Original and now Leek & Onion and Feta & Oregano flavors.  The FinnCrisp Crackers also continue to be very popular.  We have the original FinnCrisp Rye cracker and a Rye & Caraway.

Look around the counter by the cash register and you will find a small cigar humidor.  Not a large selection but 2-3 nice quality cigars.  If you are in a bind in the north woods for a little wrapped delight, stop in.

We are also adding some Forest Lake garments to our store selection.  They are on order and should be in the store soon.  There are a couple T-shirts and a hooded sweatshirt available with our logo emblazoned on the front.

From Spirit Valley we added a Raspberry Salsa.  This gives us 9 different salsa choices,  Combine these with the Frontera gourmet chips and you have snacks made for royalty!

We also added wines from Parallel Forty-Four.  This is a Wisconsin vineyard that is making wine with grapes grown in their own vineyard near Kewaunee.  Their name represents their latitude on the globe, the 44th parallel.  By no coincidence it is the same latitude that runs thru the Bordeaux region of France and the Tuscan region of Italy, two world class wine growing regions.  This is not blueberry or cranberry or another fruit wine you many times find with Wisconsin wines.  They are using some ancient grapes that are hardy enough to withstand the brutal winters found in Wisconsin.  They are delectable wines and great for the wine drinker that is fearful of big red Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel.  Clean, crisp wines with a neat finish.  Check out our display of Parallel 44 wines at the Country Store!

As far as a monthly wine special we have chosen one from Chateau Ste Michelle.  The Horse Heaven Hills Sauvignon Blanc may be the epitome of a perfect summer wine.  Crisp and clean with a brisk melon flavor.  Enjoy it with friends and family on a warm summer evening.  Normally this wine is $16.99 per bottle.  We will offer a special price of $14.99 all month and case price of $12.99 per bottle on a six bottle case.  Stop in the store and pick some up or give us a note if you want a full case.  If you need a case or more for the July 4th weekend, send us an Email by 9 AM Tuesday June 29th.

Area News

We continue to applaud the efforts of the Headwaters Food Pantry.  A handful of loyal local people spearhead this effort to provide food for less fortunate local residents.  Over 60 families rely on the pantry for their primary source of food.  There are drop boxes at the LOL Chamber of Commerce, the bank in Phelps, Jensen Akins in Conover and here at the Forest Lake Country Store.  If you are visiting for the weekend and have some canned or dry goods that you do not care to drag home drop them off at one of the convenient drop boxes.  If you care to make cash contribution checks can be mailed to:

This entire region of the state is economically dependent on recreation.  Water sports are a big part of recreation.  There is concern coming from the Tamarack Flowage, between Land O’ Lakes and Conover.  It is a gem for canoeing, kayaking, bird watching, fishing and more.  There is talk of draining the water from the flowage and returning it to a creek bed.  Here is a note from a group that is working to keep it a pristine watershed:

The Flowage Preservation Alliance a new organization whose basic objective is to preserve the Little Tamarack Flowage and its wetlands, including the adjacent  and connecting lakes { Baker, Marshall, Myrtle, and Spring Lakes }, will hold its organizational meeting Saturday, July 3rd,  at 1: 00 PM, at the Conover Town Center.

At that meeting a current report on the Dam/Culvert situation will be presented, the Flowage Preservation Alliance and its structure will be fully explained, questions answered.  Those who choose to become members will join existing members in the formal adoption of the by-laws and electing a Board of Directors. Annual dues are $10.00. The preservation of the Flowage, which is threatened because of some legal and technical problems, is the goal of this new organization.

This is not a rule making or taxing body. It is a purely voluntary membership group. It will monitor closely developments and activities that affect the flowage, and communicate that information its members, landowners, and other interested parties, and provide a voice strongly supporting the preservation of this beautiful, unique, valuable resource.

Questions may be directed to George Holloway – 547-6048.

Here is a note from good customers Heidi and Chris Reuter:

We have a fundraising website set up for Team Mason Reuter in which anybody can join our team to walk with us (cost is $11 if you register under Team Mason Reuter and that includes a DSAW T-shirt) and also to collect funds to support Down Syndrome Awareness! Walleye Planting in the Cisco Chain

It is a great program but not many outside of the Cisco Chain Riparian Owners know about.  They do annual stocking of walleyes in the Cisco Chain.  Their efforts propagate fishing opportunities for every angler, not just the riparian owners.   They have exhausted their fund for the 2010 season and have planted $10,000 worth of walleye fingerlings!  Now they are looking for donations to replenish the fund.   Donations can be made to the
