From Chocolate Hearts to Shamrocks

As we drift from icicles and scarfs towards an early spring with the promise of longer daylight hours, warmer temperatures, and an upcoming baseball season, a surprise snowfall on a Friday morning is quite a delightful surprise – a blanket of white, (Mother Nature’s surprise) giving school kids a day off play with snowmen, snow plough driver’s an extra paycheck, and the 9 to 5 working class a much needed 3 – day weekend. Heart shaped boxes of candy can fade with the idea of corn beef and cabbage, shamrocks, and indulging in green beer; everyone’s Irish on the 17th of March.

Yet this is a gradual, natural, development for nature and humans as we slowly adjust to longer daylight hours, springtime gardens, and outdoor activities. Yet a state of mind arises for all of us with the advent of a change of seasons, etc. Just the idea of a change of seasons and lifestyles can rejuvenate us, refresh us, and awaken us like a bear coming out of a long winter’s hibernation.

While feeding the birds outside everyday, I suddenly saw out of the corner of my eye something astonishing- the ambassador of spring himself, a cardinal, sporting his unmistakable ruby red coat. At the end of February ? Extraordinary !!

Yes, it’s a special time of year when it’s still comfortable to sit in front of a warm fireplace, while thoughts of springtime ideals are beckoning us outside; but for now, I’ll stay right here in front of the fireplace with my coffee and Bailey’s …. Erin Go Bragh !!
