Until college reform, yes, "Guerrilla Dad" you should pay for your kids' college

When a second blobby heartbeat popped up on my prenatal ultrasound screen last year, my very first thought was, “oh no, two more college tuitions”. ┬áSadly, we ended up only coming home with one baby – a baby whose college savings, pennies as it may be, was started before her first birthday. Why? Because college... Read more »

Stop saying, "Your English is great!"

Last night around 7:00, every restaurant in Wrigleyville had a 90-minute wait because the neighborhood was all hit at once with Billy Joel concert revelers. I guess old white people music (hi!) and Persian food don’t go hand in hand because for whatever reason, Raw Bar got us a table in ten minutes. We had... Read more »

#YesAllWomen - I dated a "nice guy" once

In the wake of the shootings in Santa Barbara, a horrible event indeed, there rises this phoenix of courage (and amazing Twitter reading) #YesAllWomen. Ladies have suddenly opened up over the past few days to tell how it is to live with everyday sexism. We live in a world where our safety is always unsure... Read more »

What not to ask a pregnant lady you've never met - UPDATED

This is an innocent question . . . until you ask someone who is only pregnant with a sandwich. Story to make you feel better if this has happened to you: When my first daughter was 12 hours old, a guest said to me in the hospital, "Jenna, are you sure they didn't leave one in there? You're still so BIG!" Fun memory. Just saying, no one is immune to this comment.
I’m pretty open when it comes to whom I consider family. If you’ve read this blog more than once, you’ve met me in person, we went to school together, worked together, drummed up a little rapport waiting for dance class dismissal or peed in an alley together in our 20’s, I’m going to be chill... The politics of my Craigslist baby crib

I’m not so much of a deal junkie as I am a weird-thing junkie. I own an original Chicago el stop sign (Linden!) as well as a leather voodoo mask, a ceramic shrunken head, and a beer can from 1978. The other day I was bored, as a person confined to the couch 22 hours... Read more »

Atrazine: The EPA-approved, EU-banned chemical in your body right now

Sometimes things happen in life. Cars crash, chips fall, hearts attack. Sometimes children die and it’s completely a chance event, one that you can’t dwell on finding causes or spend your life answering unanswerable questions like, “why my child”? And then there are events in life that have causes. For example, drunk drivers made the... Read more »

Edward Snowden is not a hero

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is not only a terrible boyfriend (LEAD STORY!) he’s also a little thing called a traitor for leaking classified documents he was paid $200,000 a year to protect. There has been lots of praise bestowed on this “hero” who sacrificed his personal and professional life in the name of government transparency.... Read more »

Parents facing abortion are not "barbarians"

Oooh, boy, this is about to be a fun one! As you may know from reading this here innerweb site, we’re currently pregnant with twins, one of whom is in a bit of jeopardy. We were originally given a 50/50 chance of Baby A (Squirt!) having a lethal chromosomal abnormality due to the poor babe’s... Read more »

What not to say to an agnostic in a pickle

I saw two beautiful faces yesterday. Four perfect hands, four little feet I’d kiss any day of the week. They were my twins during a special high-resolution ultrasound at the behest of doctors (oh, doctors) after we discovered something is amiss with the little twin’s health. It’s amazing they look so much like “real” babies... Read more »

Fitch The Homeless: Why exploiting the homeless to shame Abercrombie is wrong

You may have seen the clever consumer rebranding campaign “Fitch The Homeless” (#fitchthehomeless) the past few days. It’s a grassroots reactionary movement to the body-shaming scruples of Abercrombie & Fitch as spouted by CEO Mike Jeffries in a series of nasty comments. Among his words, now infamous, “In every school there are the cool and... Read more »
