This Saturday, I attended the sold-out event at the Chicago French Market called “Meet Alpana Under the Eiffel Tower.” It featured an eight-course brunch with wine pairings–and all 165 guests met Alpana Singh, host of Channel 11 WTTW’s “Check, Please!” and a RedEye wine columnist.
Alpana introduced the food and the wine–and mingled with the crowd, stopping by each table to chat. Before the meal started, Alpana joked with her fans: “The great thing about wine is making it your own,” she said. “I like rules but I like to break them. When I go to a BYOB restaurant, I don’t just bring one bottle, I bring several…I won’t drink all of them…yes, I will.”
Alpana would get along great with my girlfriends and me. We always bring more than one bottle wherever we go that allows wine!
All the food was from vendors at the Chicago French Market. Some of my favorite bites were the raw vegan lasagna from Raw, the beligium fries with curry mayo from Frietkoten, and the sole fish taco from City Fresh Market served with homemade guacamole and chips from Buen Apetito. (See my gallery below for pictures of these dishes!)
In addition to the food, four wines were served: Veuve de Vernay Brut Rose from France; Espirito Lagoalva from Portugal; Monastery Tvrdos Cabernet Sauvignon from Bosnia; and Domanie Saint-Vincent Brut from New Mexico.
What I learned from this event: I need to go to the Chicago French Market again–and again. This spot is European in feel and has such delicious food that I’ll be going back soon, just to shop and have a coffee on a Saturday. And you can park for free for up to an hour if you spend $20, which is great.
Also: Alpana has a lot of fans! She was a great host–and I’m sure everyone had a wonderful time drinking wine and eating great food.
