West Lakeview Liquors: Evolving as North Center Evolves

West Lakeview Liquors, 2156 W Addison, in North Center has come a long way since its beginnings as a “scary underage store” in 1988, says owner Kristina Bozic. As the neighborhood evolved, so did the shop. It’s now a liquor store, specializing in beer and wine, and a small grocery shop under the name A & L Grocer (for Addison and Leavitt). Although Bozic plans to combine the two by the end of this year.

I was very impressed with the wine selection here. I recognized many producers including Duckhorn from Napa, one of my recent favorites. But’s it’s the beer that people seem to come here for. When I was in the store, two guys from southern Illinois had made a special trip just to check out the beer here.

That’s pretty die-hard. I’m not sure if wine people would do that! A quick search on Yelp! confirmed that West Lakeview Liquors has a cult following. And I loved this quote, from Karen A. who wrote, “This little storefront crams more booze into a small space than a 10lb salami in a five pound skin.’

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

This store has it all: kegs, sake, Apple Pucker. I’m totally serious (check out the photo gallery). All this among bottles and bottles of good wine, in all price ranges, including a nice selection of wine under $10.

And best of all, Kristina carries my friend Dave Selden’s trendy beer and wine journals, called 33 Beers and 33 Wines. These tasting-note pads for the serious drinker are all the rage that even Food and Wine featured them. More on these books and their creator soon; stay tuned for a giveaway and Q & A with Dave.
