Movie Review: Zootopia Is Definitely Worth the Visit

Movie Review: Zootopia Is Definitely Worth the Visit

Genre: Animated Comedy

Rating: PG

Running Time: 108 mins.

Premise: A bunny cop (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) teams up with a sly fox (Jason Bateman) to solve the mystery of a missing otter, and uncover a mass conspiracy involving predators and prey in the process.

Behind-the-ScenesThe story for Zootopia started out as a James Bond spoof with animals.  Kristen Bell has a minor part as a sloth named Priscilla.

The Good: On the heels of Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, and Big Hero 6, Disney may have finally beat Pixar at its own game, in terms of producing consistent quality.  Zootopia is gorgeously animated, with winning voice work by the cast (Bateman’s droll sarcasm is perfectly utilized) and a surprising, stealth take on race relations.  It’s also seriously funny, featuring blink-and-you’ll-miss-it references to Frozen and Breaking Bad, among others.  The sloths who work at the DMV are comic gold.  While kids will love it, the mature storyline and clever script will appeal to adults even more.  Once again, Disney has crafted a four-quadrant blockbuster that plays well on almost every level.

The Bad: It might run a few minutes too long, with several breaks in plot that require the pacing to slow and then ramp back up again.  This is a minor quibble though.

Should You See It?: Yes!  The year is still young, but Zootopia has a real shot at winning Best Animated Feature at the next Oscars.

Star Rating: ****1/2 out of 5 stars.

Better Than: The Good Dinosaur, Brave, Big Hero 6

Worse Than: Inside Out, Toy Story 3
