Movie Review: Ride Along

Movie Review: Ride Along

Genre: Action Comedy

Rating: PG-13

Running Time: 99 mins.

Premise: In an effort to win the approval of his future brother-in-law, glowering cop James (Ice Cube), security guard Ben (Kevin Hart) agrees to accompany James on a 24-hour patrol of Atlanta.

Behind-the-ScenesTim Story (Barbershop, Taxi, Fantastic Four) directs.  Fans of FX’s The League will be interested to hear that Raffi (Jason Mantzoukas) is a co-writer.

The Good: Kevin Hart brings energy and enthusiasm to spare.  The chemistry between him and the more sardonic, low-key Ice Cube works.  Opposites do attract.

The Bad: Neither actor is given anything all that funny to do or say.  There are a few choice moments, particularly the scene at the firing range, but those have already been spoiled by the trailers.  The script is mired in lazy buddy cop action cliches, and everything about the movie screams tired and stale.  The action is infrequent and poorly choreographed.  Cube and Hart deserve better – maybe the inevitable sequel will capitalize on the promise of their pairing.

Should You See It?: No.  This one seemed like a no-brainer, nearly impossible to screw up, but somehow they found a way.

Star Rating: ** out of 5 stars.
