One year. 180 movies. Thanks for the memories, 2013. This is always a crazy time for me. As the year ends, I find myself going on one movie bender after another – this past weekend, I hit up 5 movies in 24 hours – in an attempt to see everything of note before making my Top 10 list. Some call it dedication. Others call it a sickness. But, I do it for you, dear readers.
Before we jump into the list, however, it might be worth pointing out where I’m coming from as a moviegoer, and why certain movies made the cut and others didn’t. A couple of weeks ago, Mark Harris wrote an awesome piece on Grantland about the different types of Oscar voters. You can read it here. Now, as a tried and true movie fan, I like to think I can appreciate all movies. And, while that’s generally true, based on the preferences Harris identifies in his article, I clearly qualify as a “Spectacle Guy.” I like my movies big, visually spectacular, swiftly paced, and grandly entertaining. That may help explain some of the choices you’ll see below.
