Hammervision's 10 Best Movies of 2013

One year.  180 movies.  Thanks for the memories, 2013.  This is always a crazy time for me.  As the year ends, I find myself going on one movie bender after another – this past weekend, I hit up 5 movies in 24 hours – in an attempt to see everything of note before making my Top 10 list.  Some call it dedication.  Others call it a sickness.  But, I do it for you, dear readers.

Before we jump into the list, however, it might be worth pointing out where I’m coming from as a moviegoer, and why certain movies made the cut and others didn’t.  A couple of weeks ago, Mark Harris wrote an awesome piece on Grantland about the different types of Oscar voters.  You can read it here.  Now, as a tried and true movie fan, I like to think I can appreciate all movies.  And, while that’s generally true, based on the preferences Harris identifies in his article, I clearly qualify as a “Spectacle Guy.”  I like my movies big, visually spectacular, swiftly paced, and grandly entertaining.  That may help explain some of the choices you’ll see below.

Here are my picks for the 10 best movies of 2013, in order:

Finally, a quick shout-out to the also-rans: The Spectacular Now, The Kings of Summer, The Place Beyond the Pines, This is the End, and Pacific Rim.

See you in 2014!
