Movie Essentials: 2008

In 2008, Barack Obama defeated John McCain to become the first African-American President of the United States.  Heath Ledger died of an accidental prescription drug overdose.  Miley Cyrus drew controversy by posing with a bare back and shoulders in Vanity Fair.  Madonna turned 50.  Blu-Ray beat HD-DVD in the high definition format war.  T.I. scored two smash hits with “Whatever You Like” and “Live Your Life.”  Two of the best shows on TV right now debuted: Fringe and Breaking Bad, while The Shield called it quits, going out on a high note with one of the best series finales ever.  On a personal note, our son – Hammerspawn the First was born in July.
As far as the movies go, Sex and the City jumped from the small screen to the Big (pun intended).  Indiana Jones returned to theaters after a 19-year absence, and broke hearts everywhere when aliens showed up.  Tom Cruise staged a bit of a comeback with his supporting role in the otherwise underwhelming Tropic Thunder.  Teen girls went all Four Loko for the film adaptation of Twilight.
Honorable mention goes to Frost/Nixon, Hamlet 2, Burn After Reading, Milk, and Speed Racer.  Other notable titles of ’08 include: Kung Fu Panda, Baby Mama, The Incredible Hulk, Wanted, Hellboy 2, Step Brothers, Pineapple Express, Doubt, Gran Torino, The Wrestler, Yes Man, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.  And here are your Essentials:

  • I'm going to respectfully, but vehemently, disagree on 'Cloverfield.' I want to replace it with 'Frost/Nixon,' but that's mostly because of my undying devotion to Wesley Snipes.

  • In reply to Hammer:

Whoops. That wasn't John replying to himself. That would be...odd...

  • In reply to Hammer:

I honestly do not get the In Bruges thing. I thought it was bizarre and terrible.

  • In reply to Ashby:

I'm going to pretend you didn't just type that. Or that it's Opposite Day.
