Movie Essentials: 2004

10. TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE. South Park is a tough movie to top, but darn it if Trey Parker and Matt Stone don't come close here. Team America is hugely funny and it's a great technical achievement - these marionettes do things you'd never think they could. The songs are great - I especially love "Pearl Harbor Sucks (and I Miss You)". Also notable for its searing parody of Rent ("Everyone Has AIDS") and its graphic, hilarious sex scene. F**k yeah.
In 2004, George Bush beat John Kerry and was elected to a second term as POTUS.  Scott Peterson was found guilty of murdering his wife, Laci.  Washington D.C. was terrorized by a series of sniper shootings.  Also in D.C., the National WWII Memorial opened to the public.  Janet Jackson’s boob was briefly exposed by Justin... Turning Lemons Into Lemonade: A Saw Commentary (Kind Of)

Out of habit, I was about to head to the movie theater last night to see the sole new release this weekend – Saw 3D or Saw 7 or Saw: The Final Chapter, whatever you want to call it.  But I couldn’t bring myself to do it.  Maybe it’s because I swore off wasting my... Read more »

'Community' Halloween Episode -- An Instant Classic (Video)

So I know I pimped Community last week in what has come to be known affectionately in our house as “the worst post I’ve ever written.”  Last week’s episode was mediocre at best. What a difference a week makes.  The Halloween episode of Community was a brilliant sendup of zombie movies that rivals last season’s... Read more »

3rd Trimester Freak Outs - Baby Name Hysteria

This post promises to be only somewhat entertainment-adjacent. We have two months left before Hammerspawn: The Sequel makes its debut around Christmas Day.  John may beg to differ on this, but I think I’m a pretty low-key, drama-free pregnant lady.  I don’t get morning sickness.  I don’t freak out about every little new pain or... Essential Halloween TV Episode Of the Day - Freaks & Geeks "Tricks and Treats"

They went as Groucho Marx, a guy with an arrow through his head, and Gort from 'The Day the Earth Stood Still.'
TV shows love holiday-themed episodes — and so do we!  From now until Halloween we at Hammervision are highlighting a different Halloween-themed TV episode every day. Today’s Episode: Freaks & Geeks “Tricks and Treats” The Weir children are growing up too fast for their mother, who wants them to continue their Halloween traditions of yesteryear.... Read more »

Movie Essentials: 15 Scariest Movie Moments

Movie Essentials: 15 Scariest Movie Moments
As I was watching the end of Paranormal Activity 2 through the cracks of my fingers on Friday, I got to thinking about other scary movie moments, and what has traumatized me the most over the years.  I’ve seen my fair share of horror movies, and, though everyone is different, I’m not a fan of... Movie Review - Hereafter (*)

Hereafter.  126 mins.  PG-13.  Directed by Clint Eastwood.  Written by Peter Morgan.  Starring Matt Damon, Ceciie De France, Jay Mohr, and Bryce Dallas Howard. Audiences haven’t been treated to such a somber, misguided mix of spiritual mumbo jumbo since Will Smith took a bath with a jellyfish in the excruciating Seven Pounds.  To say I... Read more »

Movie Review - Paranormal Activity 2 (***1/2)

Paranormal Activity 2.  90 mins.  R.  Directed by Tod Williams.  Written by Michael R. Perry. Starring Katie Featherston and Sprague Grayden. Rushing into movie theaters a mere year after the first movie scared audiences silly to the tune of about $107 million, Paranormal Activity 2 appears, at first glance, to be a cheap, hurried sequel... Your Thursday Night TV Conscience

There are two shows on TV tonight that are in danger of being cancelled, and unfortunately they are two of the very best shows on television right now. The first show is Community.  It’s on at 7:00 on NBC.  So, for a change, DVR Big Bang Theory and instead watch Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, and... Read more »

Essential Halloween TV Episode Of the Day - 30 Rock "Jack Gets In the Game"

TV shows love holiday-themed episodes — and so do we!  From now until Halloween we at Hammervision are highlighting a different Halloween-themed TV episode every day. Today’s Episode: 30 Rock’s “Jack Gets in the Game” While not technically a “Halloween” episode, it did feature this spooky little nugget: And that’s worth more than all the... Read more »
