How do you get active with the kids?
In today’s society, kids are on electronics just like how we as adults are staring at our cell phones to see the latest status update of our friend or food picture idea for dinner. The occurrence of getting out to enjoy the world is less likely due to these distractions. We are not getting active with the kids. Our health is affect with not being active.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention , child obesity has doubled and quadrupled in adolescents in the last 30 years. The study is dated from 2012. That study indicates that “The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same period.” I would be curious on what the stats indicate now.
I grew up in the 1980s. We had our backyard to play in. I loved our backyard because we had a shed that I would move my Dad’s tools to the side and have as my club house. We also had the weeping willow tree to swing on and a swing set that had monkey bars, two swings, a double swing and a slide. I also loved climbing on my trees in the yard and seeing if I can see the neighbor’s patio. Lastly, we had an over the garage basketball hoop.
There was one summer that we stayed with my Grandparents at Woodhaven Lakes in Sublette, Illinois for the entire summer so my parents can sort out their marriage. I remember swimming at the beach or pool almost everyday that summer. We would go on nature hikes to spot out new birds or plants. We actually had a bird book to cross out which type of bird we found. I went boating, fishing, and played at the playground.
This area would not have a phone and if someone wanted to get in touch with you, the sheriff would have to come to your trailer camping site. My Grandparents liked how quiet it was and a good sense of community we would experience. People would talk to each other and plan potlucks as a camping section. I feel that summer was memorable because we had so much to do.
How do you get active with kids?
First limit the electronic time to only 30 minutes per day and plan a walk with the kids.
The Lincoln Park Zoo is free and fun for the whole family.
My son likes Disc Golf and that is fun for older kids. What is Disc Golf: a game in which a concave plastic disc is thrown into each of a series of metal baskets situated on an outdoor course, the object being to complete the course using the fewest possible throws.
To get active with the kids, why not go on a picture scavenger hunt in the neighborhood or at the mall. On really hot days, I like getting in my steps at the mall by pushing my daughter in the stroller. With her, I point out all the items in the mall. When I am done, I have my daughter run around the play area they have at the mall. I don’t just sit watching her, I run around with her.
There are so many things you can do to get active with the kids. I know during the summer, communities have events for the family. I challenge you to get outside and enjoy the world so you stay active with the kids. It’s a win win situation, they stay active and you do too.
