As I have shared before in my fun fitness post that I love dancing. Dancing gives me the lift I need and a huge smile on my face. Dancing does even seem like it’s work. That’s why I try to find fun fitness things to do so I keep interested in this lifestyle change. Zumba has booty shak’n music to dance to and feel sexy. I feel confident to say that fun fitness is Zumba.
“Zumba several dance styles, including cumbia, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, mambo, rumba, flamenco, calypso and salsaton. The Latin music includes both fast and slow rhythms, allowing for a great cardio workout as well as body sculpting exercises. Depending on the instructor, you may even get a taste of belly dancing or hip-hop dancing, too.” (source: about Zumba website )
The first time I was introduced to Zumba was when I was a School Social Worker Intern at a middle school. My supervisor, Mary, was also a Zumba instructor. She was a woman of all trades. In 2007, we got together a group of middle school students to practice a Zumba routine and the goal was to perform it at the multicultural family night. I had such a blast and felt alive learning the different routines that Mary taught us. She had me hooked on this new workout that wasn’t even work. It was fun fitness! Let me bring you down memory lane to 2007 with a picture I came across of the performance night.
Zumba with a Friend
When my fellow Chicago Now blogger, Shavon, asked me if I would be her explorer of the month on her blog, I was honored.
We decided to go to Pulse Dance Studio at 6800 Cermak Rd Berwyn, IL on Friday, January 25. It turned out to be their Zumba Party which happens at the end of the month. It only cost $5.00. Normally the class is for 1 hour but for the party, its for 2 hours. They also had snacks to enjoy after the Zumba fun and a couple of give-a-ways. There were over 40 people at the Zumba Party with plenty of room to salsa or hip hop out to! Jazmine was the lead Zumba instructor and when she needed a break, another Zumba instructor popped in for a bit. I liked getting the chance to experience different instructor styles. I was impressed how Jazmine took the time to slow down if she saw that others were confused on the steps and then she repeated. Beginners to classes usually stand in the back and there is nothing wrong with that, so you can get use to the steps. I like how the steps will repeat through out the song so you get familiar with it. I believe I was smiling the whole time. I love the hip action and cha cha. Jazmine sure got our booties moving. She even invited people up on the stage to do the routine with her. I’m assuming that these people had been regulars to Pulse. The atmosphere was energetic, exciting, and fun fitness. This was my friend, Shavon’s first time doing Zumba. She enjoyed herself too.
When talking to the owner of Pulse Dance Studio, Angela Willis, she reported that March 2013 will be their one year anniversary at Pulse. She was asked why did she decide to open up a dance studio. She stated that she noticed that there wasn’t affordable fun activities for the community, so she decided to open Pulse Dance Studio. They offer other different dancing classes and work out sessions during the week. Those classes cost $10 per class but Zumba is always $5.00. This studio is what the Berwyn community needs. I’m all about fun fitness and this is what I needed to start my weekend off right. Working out doesn’t have to be about pain, headache, and anguish. I strongly believe that Zumba is fun fitness. I recommend anyone in the Chicagoland area to check out Pulse Dance Studio. I hope to check out their other classes they offer. Check out their website link. I encourage you to try something new with activity and you might be surprised by liking it if you give it a chance. Thanks Pulse Dance Studio for a wonderful and fun Zumba night. I hope to be back again.
