Ever been in a group and feel like you are the only one that feels a certain way? Ever speak up only to have it turn into a lynch mob on you? That has been a recurring feeling that I have been having lately.
Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Everyone wants to belong and have friends. From the kid that eats alone in the school cafeteria, to the kids on the playground, to the millions on Facebook and Twitter, we all need friends and a sense of belonging.
There can be a downside to trying to fit into a group, though. You might find yourself compromising your integrity just to try to fit in. You might find yourself in a position where remaining silent condones certain conversations or behavior.
What kind of friend am I? What do I add to the group? Am I a negative influence or a positive one? Am I talking to and treating others the way I would want to be treated? Am I being a light for Christ in this group? Am I sticking to my beliefs? Do I speak to others with love?
Jesus was always taking heat for spending time with misfits. He also led a life according to God’s standards by speaking truth in love. If we are supposed to be like Him, then we need to love others as Jesus loves us.
Mark 12:31 You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
So here are some things to try when you feel yourself “not fitting in”:
Spend time in prayer with God– He is always there and accepts you just the way you are. He already knows you better than you know yourself and still loves you!
Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Don’t try to change anyone to the way you want them to be– The same way as you want others to accept you, start by accepting others the way they are.
Luke 6:31 And as you wish others would do to you, do so to them.
Leave groups that are unhealthy for you– Is that person in the Facebook group pushing your buttons? Maybe it’s time to evaluate if it’s good for you, or even necessary, to be in that group.
1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
