What To Do When Neighbors Aren’t Neighborly

God wasn’t kidding when he talked about being neighborly. The expression “Love the neighbor” is mentioned 9 times, while the word “neighbor” appears over 100 times.

The reason I mention this is because God knows that we are all going to struggle with getting along with our neighbors.

Last week, my neighbor left this note on my father’s car. My parents came over to babysit and there is no street parking during the day on my side of the street because we are a block away from the school.

parking note

“Please park in front of your own house so I can park in front of mine!!”

Now I have to admit, I wish this didn’t bother me, but it did. I wish I could say that I didn’t get mad, but I did. I wish I could say that I am not tempted to park my car there instead of my driveway, but I am tempted to. Fortunately I am not going to do that.

Being a follower of Christ is not easy all of the time. To turn the other cheek, is not always easy but I know in this case the best thing for me to do is let it go. Admit it, you have that song in your head now, don’t you? I won’t post a clip for you since you probably have that tune in your head now anyways.

Mark 12:31 You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

I have barely spoken to this neighbor in the 13 years I have lived in my house. I really wish that instead of leaving that note on the car, he would have come and talked to me about whatever issues he has about parking in front of his house. Clearly he is not a big fan of mine if he felt this was the best route to go to handle the situation.

At some point, maybe I will be able to talk to him about this situation. A friend of mine once told me that arguing with someone that isn’t operating under the authority of God’s Word is a waste of time. For now, I believe that God is telling me to let this rest and give it some time before I address it with him. Until then I will let go and let God take care of it.

Romans 15:2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
