Reel Guests in With This Last Minute Oscar Menu

Oscar night is the one evening I unabashedly immerse myself in fashion, celebrity gossip, and all things Hollywood. With the ladies arriving in a few hours, what are some quick and clever ways to reel in your guests with delicious gluten free and dairy free food? We all need extra energy to get through the endless red carpet interviews, outfit analysis, and verbose acceptance speeches. For this gladly gluten free menu, I’d like to thank the Academy….

Oscar Night Menu

  • The Help Yourself to Southern Toast and Peach Hot Pepper Jelly
  • Fresh Popped Corn with Sea Salt
  • The Artist’s Fresh Fruit Palette with Yogurt Dip
  • Red Carpet Red Velvet Cupcakes
  • Lemon Lime Prosecco – Prosecco with a splash of Rose’s Sweetened Lime Juice
  • French Wine for a Midnight in Paris

Moneyball Sweet n’ Sour Meatballs

1 lb ground beef
1/3 cup gluten free bread crumbs (Ener-G brand works well)
1/3 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup Silk unsweetened Almond milk
1 egg
1 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp Lea & Perrin’s worcestershire sauce
few twists of fresh ground pepper

Sweet n’ Sour Sauce

1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 cup Muir Glen organic tomato sauce
2 tbsp brown sugar
4 tsp Lea & Perrin’s worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp French’s honey mustard
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 cup Dole crushed pineapple

Combine all sweet n’ sour sauce ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Mix together and pour sauce into the bottom of a slow cooker. Set slow cooker to low setting (4-6 hours). Add all meatball ingredients in a large bowl. Mix with your hands and form into 16-18 meatballs. Place meatballs on top of sauce and cook (covered) until done.

The Help Yourself to Southern Toast and Peach Hot Pepper Jelly

1 Udi’s pizza crust (or other gluten free pizza crust)
1 8 oz. tub of Galaxy or Tofutti gluten and dairy free cream cheese
1 8.5 oz. jar Hot Pepper Peach Preserves (Robert Rothschild Farm is gluten free)

Cook pizza crust according to package directions until toasted. Remove from oven and let cool. Cut crust into small triangles or squares. Place a dollop of cream cheese on top of each crust piece, topped with a dollop of hot pepper peach preserves.

The Artist’s Fresh Fruit Palette with Yogurt Dip

1 8 oz. tub of Galaxy or Tofutti gluten and dairy free cream cheese
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/3 cup Silk vanilla yogurt
Assorted fresh fruit (banana slices, orange slices, strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries)

Blend the first four ingredients in medium sized bowl. Take an artist’s palette (I used a wooden one and covered it with aluminum foil) and arrange the fresh fruit on the plate (simulating dollops of paint). Place dollops of the yogurt dip on the palette as well.

Lemon Lime Prosecco

1 bottle of Prosecco
1 bottle of Rose’s Sweetened Lime Juice
Sugar – on a plate for dipping rim of champagne flutes
Fresh squeezed lemon juice
Fresh squeezed lime juice

Dip the rim of each champagne glass into fresh squeezed lemon juice, followed by sugar. Pour 2 parts Prosecco into a glass, 1 part Rose’s lime juice, and a splash of lemon juice. Stir and enjoy.

Decorative Touches

Don’t forget the little touches that can make a casual Oscar gathering more festive. Her are just a few ideas that I’ve used in the past to create that Oscar ambience:

  • Luminaries: Take white paper bags, sand, and votive candles to spell out H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D on your front porch
  • Red Carpet: Lay a piece of long red butcher paper or plastic tablecloth down in your entryway to let guests walk their own red carpet
  • Swag Bags: Fill colorful paper bags with very simple items ladies adore such as lip gloss or monogrammed notepads
  • Ballots for each guest to keep track of their projected Oscar winners
  • Envelope Napkins: Fold a party napkin into an envelope shape and close with a golden seal sticker. And the Oscar goes to….
  • Movie Posters: Call local theaters to see if they have leftover posters for some of the Oscar nominated movies
  • Photos of the Stars: Arrange 3 x 5 pictures of the Oscar nominees throughout the appetizer table. Who doesn’t enjoy looking at a glam shot of George Clooney while grabbing that extra helping of popcorn?
