Adolescent Outfit

During Sexual Assault Awareness Month, “Not for Ourselves Alone” is running a special series called 30 Days of Bodyshaming, designed to give a voice to the many different experiences of girls and women. This series will feature guest posts by professors, writers, a cartoonist, young girls, and mothers. Gut wrenching and honest, these stories are presented in an attempt to bring about a deeper understanding of the plight of girls and women as we make our way in world that, for us, is hostile at its best and violent at its worst.

Adolescent Outfit

She is baby greens

In this eating world

Juicy, in a red-peppered skirt

Or leggings, yoga pants, skinny jeans

Down a bustling hall

The gym teacher drools

A feast in the making

He sees only the

Dressing

Her pace picks up

She senses what all girl-babies know

That scented, neck-prickle

Of being hungered for

Adjusting his blueberry-shaped, athletic shorts

Her name rests on his raw lips

A sound like carrots screaming as they’re

Hauled from the ground.

The cannibal grins

“I can tell by your pants,”

He whispers, “You want to be eaten.”
