Scouting report

Phegley was drafted as an advanced college catcher and it appeared he would move through the system quickly until he was diagnosed with ITP in 2010. As a result, he only played 48 games that year. When he was able to play, Phegley flashed some of his offensive abilities at Winston-Salem and Birmingham, but that didn't carry over in 2011. He has shown a good contact rate, but minimal power and a poor walk rate. The thing scouts seem to love most about Phegley is his makeup and work ethic. It is what put him above several other top catchers in the '09 draft along with his spectacular college production. His level swing results in a lot of line drives. Behind the plate he has a good arm, but problems in other areas of his defense (though recent reports indicate improvement). For Charlotte in 2012 he putĀ in his second straight full season, started the season red hot and finished hot, but had an extended midseason slump that dropped his overall stats. Phegley sustained that streaky play and consistently produced in AAA in 2013 to become fan darling and earn a promotion to the White Sox in early July.
