White Sox Minor League Recap 8/21: Martinez and relievers shutout Brewers

Gwinnett 10, Charlotte 6

Jared Mitchell went 3-5 with a homer and every Knight in the lineup had a hit aside from Matt Davidson, but the Braves bashed their way to another victory. Starter Andre Rienzo struggled with his command as he walked four batters in five innings and allowed six earned runs to score. Justin Jirschele, who has played sporadically since being promoted from Winston-Salem, got the start at 2B and went 2-5 thanks to Carlos Sanchez joining the White Sox in lieu of the Gordon Beckham trade. Jirschele should get regularly playing time now with Micah Johnson shut down and Sanchez in Chicago.

Chattanooga 6, Birmingham 4

Jason Coats went 3-4 and Joey DeMichele went 2-3 with two triples but it wasn’t enough as the Barons fell to the Chattanooga Lookouts Thursday. Starter Myles Jaye pitched well, but was betrayed by his defense. Jaye allowed four runs, but only one earned over five innings.

Salem 2, Winston-Salem 1

Tyler Danish had another strong outing, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing two runs while striking out four and walking none. The Dash offense only managed five hits, Keon Barnum delivered four of them in a perfect 4-4 night.

Asheville 7, Kannapolis 1

Jordan Guerrero picked up his first loss of the season by giving up two runs over his five innings of work. Jeremy Dowdy and Jacob Morris went 2-4 but the Intimidators offense could only manage one run.

Great Falls 2, Helena 0

White Sox teenager Luis Martinez pitched five scoreless innings Thursday to lower his ERA with the Voyagers to 1.33. Martinez allowed six hits, struck out six, but most notably, did not allow a walk. Thursday was the first outing of the season where Martinez did not allow a walk. The Voyagers completed the shutout in fine fashion as relievers Aaron Bummer, Devon Davis, and Alex Powers combined to throw four scoreless innings, allowing no hits, two walks, and recorded nine strikeouts.
