7/26/14 recap: Rodon starts in Arizona

First round pick Carlos Rodon started for the first time in his pro career for Arizona, although he is still limited in terms of pitch count. Meanwhile, his former college teammate at North Carolina State, Brett Austin, is picking up his play.

Louisville 6, Knights 5 (7 innings)

Marcus Semien 2-4, 2B, HR #9, K

Charlotte lost the first of a scheduled doubleheader despite a nice game from Marcus Semien. Bobby Doran gave up six runs in three innings. The second game was suspended in the fourth due to rain.

Tennessee 7, Barons 4 (10 innings)

Scott Snodgress 7 IP, 3 R, 5 K, 4 BB, 4 H

This start is pretty much the story of Snodgress’ season: decent ERA (3.89), OK number of strikeouts (79 in 115.2 IP) and too many walks (52). As a 6-foot-6 lefty, he can always have a future in the bullpen.

Dash 2, Wilmington 1 (11 innings)

Terance Marin 7 IP, R, 6 K, 0 BB, 2 H

Jason Coats had his 14th homer of the season and Keon Barnum had two hits to boost the offensive effort. Marin has a 3.16 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 9 walks in 51.1 IP since rejoining the White Sox organization out of independent ball.

Lakewood 4, Intimidators 3

Brett Austin 3-4, 2B

Robinson Leyer got spared a loss despite a quality start when Kanny scored twice in the top of the ninth to tie the game and three, but lost in the bottom half of the inning. Trey Michalczewski had two hits and a double, which is a good sign considering he had just two hits in the past eight games combined.

Austin, a fourth round pick this year, added 24 points to his batting average. After hitting .226/.265/.290 in eight games in June, he is hitting a much more solid .308/.413/.423 in July and .277/.361/.373 overall.

Voyagers 6, Billings 0

Dane Stone 7 IP, 4 K, BB, 3 H

Stone’s seven scoreless innings were boosted by homers from Dillon Haupt and Zach Fish. Haupt homered for the second game in a row to bring his season total to five. Third round pick Jace Fry pitched a one-two-three inning in relief.

Mariners 8, Arizona White Sox 7 (1o innings)

Carlos Rodon 2 IP, R, 4 K, 0 BB, 2 H

This was Rodon’s first professional start after pitching out of the bullpen on July 22. Here are some tweets of note about his outing:
