6/19/2014 Recap: home run derby for Sox prospects

It was a wild night for the White Sox affiliates with plenty of offense to go around. The Barons won a crazy game in extra, going down five runs, then rallying for eight runs in one inning, then blowing a four run lead in the 9th only to tack on two more in the 10th to win. The Dash won thanks to an offensive barrage from a new face, and the Voyagers hung on for the win. Also notable, 2014 fourth round pick Brett Austin made his professional debut with Kannapolis and went 1-4 with a double, three RBI’s, and a walk.

Star of the Day: It was a very tough decision since there was so many great individual performances, but Omar Narvaez had a truly special night. The switch-hitting catcher was playing in his first game for the Dash since being promoted and blasted two home runs and knocked in four runs en route to a 3-4 night at the dish. This is especially incredible for Narvaez because in his previous 260 professional games he had two career home runs. He is now slashing .305/.342/.374 this season.

Who is Hot: Might as well start with two of Narvaez’s teammates, Tim Anderson and Courtney Hawkins. Anderson went 3-5 with and hit his fifth homer of the season. Anderson now has five homers through 60 games, compared to last season where he only hit one over 68 games in Kannapolis. Courtney Hawkins went 2-5 and hit his 11th homer, snapping a bit of a power drought for him. Hawkins is hitting .344/.410/.500 over his last ten games. Rangel Ravelo had a huge night, going 2-4 with a homer, a double, and two walks. It was Ravelo’s fifth homer of the season, which is a new career high. Ravelo’s teammate Kevan Smith also blasted his fifth homer, going 2-4 with three RBI’s and a walk. In Charlotte, Matt Davidson went 3-4 with a double and Carlos Sanchez went 2-5 with his fifth homer. Sanchez’s five homers is also a career high, he only had three homers over his previous five season.
