5/13/14 Recap: Micah Johnson debuts in Charlotte

The affiliates avoided getting swept for the second straight day with Birmingham coming out on top behind a strong Scott Snodgress start.

Chicago White Sox Affiliates

Charlotte 2, Durham 5
Micah Johnson 0-4, K
Carlos Sanchez 0-1, R, 2BB, K
Jordan Danks 0-4, 2K
Josh Phegley 1-4, HR, 2RBI, K
Matt Davidson 1-3, 2K
Felipe Paulino 5IP, 7H, 5R, 3ER, 3BB, 3K
Eric Surkamp 3IP, 2H, BB, 3K

Knights’ Notes
Micah Johnson went 0-4 in his first start since getting called up from Birmingham.
Josh Phegley has had a recent power surge, homering four times in his last 18 at-bats.
Eric Surkamp has had his last three outings come out of the bullpen after Felipe Paulino took his place in the rotation. For whatever reason, Surkamp has pitched much better out of the pen behind Paulino than he had starting (15IP, 12H, 3ER, 1.80 ERA, 17/2 K/BB).
Adam Eaton is supposed to join the Knights on Wednesday for a rehab assignment.

Birmingham 5, Pensacola 4
Daniel Wagner 2-4, R, RBI
Jeff Keppinger 1-4, 2B, R, RBI
Trayce Thompson 1-3, 2RBI, K
Rangel Ravelo 3-4, R, 2B
Kevan Smith 0-3, BB, K
Scott Snodgress 7IP, 5H, 1R, 0ER, BB, 5K

Barons’ Beat
-Scott Snodgress has had more success since getting rocked out of the gate. Snodgress owns a 2.12 ERA over his last 5 starts but his WHIP of 1.42 puts the sustainability of his success question.
Rangel Ravelo (3-4, 2B, R) got back on track tonight after a mini-slump the last two weeks. The 22-year-old has been on OBP machine for the Barons in the early going.

Winston-Salem 0, Myrtle Beach 2
Tim Anderson 0-3, K
Jacob May 1-4, 2B, 2K
Courtney Hawkins 1-4, 2B
Keon Barnum 0-3, BB, 2K
Nick Basto 1-4, K
Mike Recchia 7IP, 4H, 2ER, 2BB, 4K
Bryan Blough IP, 2K

Dash Dots
-25-year-old Mike Recchia took the loss today but pitched well despite having zero offensive support. The right-hander should expect a promotion to Birmingham soon as hitters are batting just .188 against him and he has a K/BB ratio of 47/10 in his 40.1 innings this year.
-As hard as it is to believe, Keon Barnum’s struggles have only gotten worse. The first-baseman is 5-for-his-last-35 with 12 strikeouts for an ugly slash of .143/.189/.257/.446 during the ten game stretch.

Kannapolis 1, Hagerstown 3
Adam Engel 2-4, R, K, SB(17)
Danny Hayes 1-4, RBI
Jacob Morris 2-3, BB
Trey Michalczewski 0-4, K
Carl Thomore 0-4, 2K
Jake Sanchez 6IP, 5H, 2R, ER, BB, 5K
Jordan Guerrero 2IP, 3H, ER

Kannapolis Bits
Jake Sanchez, 24, continues to pitch with the youngsters in A- despite his dominant stretch of pitching. Sanchez is top 5 in ERA, WHIP and Ks in the SAL league.
Tyler Williams, son of Kenny Williams, has seemed to hit a wall after a nice start. In his last 38 PAs the second-baseman is slashing .147/.237/.176/.413.
