4/27/14 recap: DeMichele, Hawkins have big days for Winston-Salem

Donnie Veal let up a run in 10th inning that led to a Charlotte defeat. Birmingham totaled 6 runs in the 7th and 8th innings to secure a victory over Chattanooga. Winston-Salem poured in 15 runs to win a game that had two teams combine for 24 runs. A 9th inning Tyler Williams 2-RBI single wasn’t enough for the Intimidators to overcome a 3-run deficit.

Star of the Day: Joey DeMichele, DH
DeMichele had perhaps that best game of any prospect in any contest all season. Not only did DeMichele reached base in all six plate appearances, scored five times, homered, walked once and chipped in two stolen bases in what was a true, all-around offensive attack. The 2012 third rounder carried an ugly .167/.239/.217 slash line into the game so hopefully this effort spearheads a turnaround.

Honorable Mention: Courtney Hawkins, LF
Hawkins homered in his second straight game and batted in two runners. The two RBIs brought Hawkins’ total to a minor-league-leading 27. Hawkins did reach base three times by walking. While Hawkins went 1-3, one of his outs flew to the warning track in centerfield.

Turning it Around: Carlos Sanchez, 2B
After starting his 2014 campaign poorly, the FutureSox #12 prospect has hit his way out of the slump. In his last 40 PAs, Sanchez has posted .400/.476/.457, boosting his season totals tremendously. After an incredibly strong winter in the Venezuelan league, there is hope that Sanchez is adjusting to a league that the 21-year-old is still young for. After dominating at Winston-Salem and Birmingham in 2012, the White Sox challenged him with an uber-aggressive assignment when they sent him to Charlotte in 2013. His results at Charlotte last year were understandably meager when he posted a .241/.293/.296 slash. More continued success for Sanchez could fathomably propel the middle infielder into the conversation of future White Sox infielders that has been dominated by Marcus Semien, Micah Johnson and even Tim Anderson.
