4/14/14 recap: Wendelken bright spot on rainy day

There were only two affiliates in action today as the Barons and Intimidators were rained out. The Knights were shut out for the first time this season and the Dash fell short to Wilmington.

Durham 6, Knights 0

Gorkys Hernandez 1-3, 2B, BB, K
Carlos Sanchez 0-2, 2 BB, K
Josh Phegley 0-3, BB
Matt Davidson 1-4, 2 K
Andre Rienzo 4 IP, 4 ER, 3 K, 3 BB, 6 H

Wilmington 3, Dash 1

Jacob May 1-3, 2B, K
Tim Anderson 0-4, 3 K
Courtney Hawkins 2-4, RBI, K
Keon Barnum 0-4, 3 K
Jeffrey Wendelken 6.1 IP, 1 ER, 6 K, 0 BB, 4 H

Star of the day: Jeffrey Wendelken has never started before this season but the results through three games are encouraging. After two solid but unspectacular starts, he dazzled a very strong Wilmington Royals lineup tonight with six strikeouts over 6.1 innings and only allowing a run on four hits. Wendelken now has a tidy 2.60 ERA with a respectable 12/2 K/BB rate over his first 17.1 innings.

Who is Hot: Courtney Hawkins went 2-4 tonight and his slash line is a robust .333/.370/.643. Recently acquired veteran OF Gorkys Hernandez went 1-3 with a walk.

Who is Not: Andre Rienzo struggled tonight, giving up four runs, six hits, and three walks over four innings pitched. The Winston-Salem Dash offense has mustered two runs over their last four ballgames so to say their bats have gone cold would be an understatement. Tim Anderson went 0-4 with three strikeouts and his average has dipped to .244. Keon Barnum has struck out in 8 of his last 11 at-bats.
