Fire humbled in 4-1 defeat at San Jose

Following up their two best games of the year with a road match while missing arguably the team’s best offensive and defensive players, the Fire allowed four Chris Wondolowski goals en route to a 4-1 defeat. Wondolowski came into the match needing two scores to break Landon Donovan’s mark and become MLS’s all-leading goal scorer and he got four – at least two were completely preventable.

San Jose took the lead in the 21st when Francisco Calvo and Jorge Corrales lost track of Wondolowski in front of goal, enabling the veteran striker to easily tap in a pass from Shea Salinas. Calvo seemed to react late while playing too deep in front of Wondolowski.

Nemanja Nikolic missed a clear chance to tie the game two minutes later after San Jose goalkeeper Daniel Vega gifted a clearance right to Przemyslaw Frankowski. Nikolic’s shot attempt was directly at Vega. Nikolic missed an open header late in the first half as well.

Fire ‘keeper David Ousted bobbled a cross in front of the net and dropped the ball, where a waiting Wondolowski tapped in the gimme from close range in the 48th.

In the 74th, Cristian Espinoza dribbled by Calvo and other Fire defenders before eluding a comically bad tackle attempt by Marcelo. Espinoza was able to find Wondolowski alone in the box for another score.

Two minutes later, Ousted spilled a save at the post allowing Jackson Yueill to find Wondolowski open yet again at the opposite post.

The Fire got a consolation goal in the 83rd when a San Jose defender deflected Aleksandar Katai’s attempt from distance into the net past a misdirected Vega.

The absence of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Nicolas Gaitan certainly hurt the Fire, but the lack of focus,  particularly in the second half should be of concern.
