Late goal salvages 1-1 draw vs Orlando City

CJ Sapong scored a 95th minute header in what was likely the last play of the match to give the Fire a 1-1 draw at home on a cold, windy, and eventually rainy home opener. Przemyslaw Frankowski, who had entered the match in the 68th minute was able to land a perfectly placed cross to Sapong amid several Orlando City defenders.

Gusting winds made game play difficult from the start and Nemanja Nikolic missed on two good chances in the first half to keep the score level at the mid way mark.

Orlando City took the lead in the 47th minute when it appeared that some miscommunication between David Ousted and Johan Kappelhof kept both players from aggressively playing a chip into the box from Nani. Dominic Dwyer worked his way past Kappelhof to pop the ball into the net past Ousted.

Jorge Corrales put the Fire into a deeper hole in the 64th minute courtesy of a straight red card after an attempted tackle on Orlando’s Ruan.

  • Guillermo, who plays for Corrales at LB next game? tia

  • In reply to go fire:

    My guess is Hasler

  • Hey G! Should I drop my subscription to The Athletic? There's precious little coverage of the Fire and that's all I was looking for. I count only 3 articles specifically on the Fire over the last month, none since the season started.

  • In reply to Arklow:

Nope....there's plenty more coming up on The Athletic. Paul Tenorio has also provided some Fire news as well.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

I had the same question. I love your coverage, but I am wondering where you have been:)

Was there anything new at the stadium for the opener? Any improvements, changes, or additions?

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

I counted one of Paul's Fire specific columns to get to 3 for the past month. The other 2 were yours. I know there was the occasional mention of the Fire in several others but, hardly worth mentioning.

  • In reply to Arklow:

I've got two pieces coming up that I'm sure you guys will enjoy.
