Atlanta United defeats Fire 2-1

Without Miguel Almiron and Tito Villalba, Atlanta United isn’t quite the same team that has stormed to the top of the Supporters Shield standing but they still had enough to hand the Fire their 18th loss of the season.

Franco Escobar gave Atlanta the lead after being allowed plenty of time and space to shoot on goal from the left side of the Fire’s defense in the 9th minute.

The Fire equalized in the 24th via good combination play from Bastian Schweinsteiger, Brandt Bronico, and Djordje Mihailovic and a quality finish from Michael de Leeuw. It was his second goal of the season since returning from ACL surgery recovery.

Two minutes later, Johan Kappelhof deflected a cross into his own goal.

The Fire failed to register a shot on goal in an uneventful second half.

  • Only one observation: soccer should not be played on artificial turf. It is a totally different game.
