New York City FC defeated the Fire 2-0 in a midweek match that cemented the inevitable. The loss mathematically eliminated the Fire from the playoffs. This will be the seventh time in the last nine seasons that the club has missed out on postseason play.
Goals from Alex Ring in the 47th minute and David Villa in the 51st were enough to defeat a Fire side that featured a couple of changes from the last two matches. Stefan Cleveland, Drew Conner, and Raheem Edwards were given a chance to start but the Fire failed to threaten much throughout the contest.
