Happy New Year from Fire Confidential

With 2014 mercifully over Fire fans can start looking forward to a new season which officially begins in a few weeks when players report for physicals on January 25. The squad will look much different in 2015 with new Designated Players David Accam and Kennedy Igboananike in the fold but Frank Yallop and company still have work to do to fill out the roster between now and the end of January. The MLS Superdraft and the opening of the European transfer window should provide an opportunity for additional reinforcements but until then we’ll take one look back at how our predictions fared last season. Three out of our four prognosticators (Jeff Krause, Kevin Egan, ESPN 1000’s Fred Huebner, and myself) picked the Portland Timbers to win some hardware and they didn’t even make the playoffs. Only one tabbed the correct MLS Cup winner. Kevin Egan picked the Los Angeles Galaxy to win the title, although he did name the Fire as their Cup competition (I think he was only half-joking).

Chicago Fire Confidential will return next season with the podcast and more episodes of Fire Confidential Live sprinkled in. Hopefully the predictions will be more accurate in 2015 but we’ll continue to provide the breaking news stories, game recaps, analysis, and coverage that you’re looking for when it comes to professional soccer in Chicago. This past season marked the completion of my fifth year writing this blog and I thank you all for reading, commenting, and sharing your passion. 2015 has got to be better. Right?

Happy New Year!

  • Thanks, Guillermo, for keeping the flame alive. As much as I complain about the team's performance, I really appreciate the information you provide, and what you and Jeff do on the podcast. I'm hopeful that 2015 will provide you with a lot of opportunities to give high ratings of Fire players in your regular posts.

  • Guys. Guillermo. Thanks a ton for your work. You have done a great job. I am so glad that I am not a nyfc fans, the way lampard and the Manchester city group threw the the team under the buss is a disgrace. The red bulls must be loving this situation.
On the fire front I finally broke down and purchased tickets. It appears that a Yallop and Bliss are finally going about recruiting correctly. The only thing that honestly worries me is if yallop is up to competing against the new innovative coaching that is currently in the mls. I am hoping that they focus on a good distributing center medfielder for the jext pick.

  • Thanks for all the great work, Guillermo. Happy 2015 to the entire Fire fan community!

  • Aye! Thanks for all your good work on this site to both Guillermo and Jeff! There's no place I would rather look first for news and reporting on the Fire. Here's hoping you will have a better situation to report on this year.

  • In reply to Arklow:

Agree with Arklow. I steer people who are not hardcore fans yet here for the latest in news and commentary.

    Here's to better days.

  • In reply to BrianC.:

(That last comment was in reference to the team.) =)

  • Guillermo, thanks for all the work you do to keep us posted on the Fire. I am always excited about the future so I believe 2015 will be a good year. I hope I am right!

  • Naturally Gladbach! The 2015 will be a good year for you and your family. I am going to niagara trip to celebrate this year. I am too excited to see this fall. It is one of the most famous and also included in the Seven Wonders of the World. It offers a lot of stunning and eye effect views of all visitors. It is one of the largest falls of the world. Have you ever visited there before?

  • Thanks Guillermo & Jeff for your work on the site and podcast (and for putting up with the increasingly restless & cynical Fire fans).

You guys do a great job.

    Happy New Year!

  • Thank you all for your kind words. Looking forward to getting things cranked back up in 2015, and hopefully having good things to chat about on the pod this season.

  • Merry New Year Guillermo & Jeff! Thanks for keeping us updated throughout the past year and talking us (really just me) off the ledge. Hoping for great things to come in 2015 for everyone that supports the team and the team themselves!

  • Thank you very much for keeping us so well informed with your blogs! I love the honesty and research that goes into the info you give us, something that has been lost from the Owner and FO in these dark days of the Fire organization! Hopefully we turn a corner and make the playoffs this coming season and future seasons and make our rise from the abyss we have been in!

  • Guys I never thought that I would say that I am glad that we have the fire rather than a team like NYFC. This entire deal about lampard and his not signing or signing a contract is a huge joke. Does anyone remember he and Gerald happy as drunken larks after the 9/11 disaster. They claimed they did not mean their actions but I for one would not want either one near my family. As far as I am concerned the mls should leave the beckmans , lampards ,Defoes and Gerald in their over paid spoiled world. Let us develop our own type of soccer.

  • GR, thanks for the great work you do all year long. I'm looking forward to a better year than last year. Can only go up. Do the Fire have any homegrown players lined up for this year?

  • In reply to Krasov:

Not sure if you already saw this and are referring to them signing another homegrown, but they signed Collin Fernandez in late Aug.

  • In reply to Krasov:

I think Cam Lindley will get a HG offer at some point. May not be until late 2015 though.

  • I didn't think Romero was still in the mix for the Fire. Would he have been the 3rd DP if they could've agreed on a deal?

  • In reply to c0quito18:

They looked at Romero again this winter but went after Accam instead when deal wasn't reached. Once Accam signed, Romero was out of the picture. The third DP slot would be used on a midfielder or central defender.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

    any rumors/names on that front?

  • In reply to Tweaky:

    Working on those.

  • Sorry to hear of the domestic violence charges against Dan Paladini. If there's truth in the described charges, he's got some real issues. Hope he gets help as well as his due.
