Klopas named Montreal coach and director of player personnel

The speculation is over in Montreal. The Impact announced today that Frank Klopas has been named the club’s head coach and director of player personnel. Klopas will keep the assistant coaches in place but will also have a technical director to deal with and a sporting director above him. The question of how that hierarchy will operate or who will have the final say on player decisions can probably only be answered by owner Joey Saputo who downplayed rumors of a coaching move after our initial report that Klopas was interviewing with the club last Friday.

The Fire will face Montreal three times in 2014 with trips to Canada on April 12 and August 16. The Impact don’t come to Toyota Park until October 5.

It will be odd to see Klopas on the other sideline.

  • Good luck to Frank. I'm not sure that's a ideal situation to be in, even if he did not have those layers between him and Saputo.

Funny though, how the Fire have become a feeder of coaching talent for our "voisins au nord" (neighbors to the north).

  • Congrats to Klopas, nice to see him land somewhere. Definitely have to wonder how he'll deal with being on a shorter leash than he was in Chicago, though.

  • At least we know what Frank will be doing in 2014, however 2015 is another matter. Wish him good luck.
AS far as the re-entry draft both Cannon and Pearce would be outstanding pick-ups, outside of possibly Hartman, don't see any other names that would have a positive impact on the fire.

He's got a three year deal up there. He's got that going for him. At least he's got that even if he doesn't make it that far with Saputo.

  • The Fire just announced Rolfe's resigning on their website. Sounds like lower wages but a long-term deal as Yallop apparently mentioned in the town hall.

  • The Fire declined to select anyone in round 2 of the re-entry draft.

Shaun Francis was selected by San Jose.

  • I kinda hope someone opens talks w/ Dan Gargan. That guy deserves to be playing somewhere in MLS.

  • In reply to Jeff Krause:

I'd like to see him come back just so he can participate in the Art of Futbol event.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

The man has definite artistic skills, no doubt.
