Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone and thanks again for your support and passion for all things Fire and soccer!

2014 will mark my fifth season here at Fire Confidential and we’ll hopefully have some new and exciting things happening this summer. In the meantime, if you’re not out and about ringing in the New Year (and even if you are) take a listen to the latest episode of the Fire Confidential Podcast as we take a look back at the best and worst of 2013 with the Daily Herald’s Orrin Schwarz.

Be safe…..next season is just around the corner!

  • 5 years, huh? Time flies. Happy NY Guillermo, and to all fellow Fire fans! I have a feeling '14 is going to be a much better year for us all...not to mention a WC to look forward to!

  • In reply to Drew:

    Can't wait for summer!

  • Thanks for another good year, Guillermo! (Good year of coverage that is...) It's often hard to be a Fire fan in this city, but it's made easier when we have great reporters like you on the beat.

  • In reply to manyou07:

    Thanks manyou!

  • Happy New Year Guillermo! We're already in it on the East Coast but you're about to join us. Hopefully 2014 is better for the Fire than 2013.

  • Marco Pappa has been released by Heerenveen. He's available on a free transfer.

If he returns to MLS, the Fire would not have first dibs. Since they received a transfer fee for him he would be subject to allocation.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Not to sound stupid, but aren't they a little heavy at that position? Or would you push Duka to the bench? I know Pat was a little banged up at the end of the season but I would imagine he would take up a good chunk of the cap. Unless he could play the CAM position? But I thought that's something Yallop was hoping to take care of in Europe, possibly.

Also, would he want to come back? He might be able to get more money in Liga MX if he so chooses.

PS - happy new year Guillermo! Thanks for being my distraction from work the past 4 years!

  • In reply to c0quito18:

I'm not sure about Pappa either. His last year with the Fire was not his best - especially once the pre-transfer agreement was made. His cap hit would surely be bigger than Duka's, too. I'd like to see us invest in Duka as he's developing into a player who's showing the potential he promised in Columbus.

Players are obviously not the same, but after Rolfe's European trip, he came back with mixed results in MLS. He might well be more marketable in Liga MX as cOquito18 said.

Maybe Yallop has his eye on someone in the Draft (oh, sorry, SuperDraft)? I don't know the pool well enough to even guess at that. Or another position? We could use some backup I think, as there was a dropoff without Nyarko and Duka in the lineup in my opinion. But I don't know that bringing in Pappa would necessarily be the answer.

  • In reply to c0quito18:

Thanks for contributing over the last 4 years Coquito!

They are heavy on the wings. I'm not sure there is room for Pappa at this point either on the roster or via budget space.
