Tonight’s MLS All Star game was a thrilling affair between the All Stars (who were carrying a 5 game win streak against European teams into the match..) and Everton FC of the English Premier League. After 90 minutes the teams were all square at 1-1 and — per All Star Game rules — they went to penalties. Everton (and U.S. national team) keeper Tim Howard came up huge in PK’s, making three saves to ensure a 4-3 Everton penalty advantage and the win.
On the whole the match was a very entertaining affair and by all rights the MLS All Stars should have walked away winners. They created a ton of chances (especially in the second half, when they out shot Everton 9-1) and even hit the post once. But in the end MLS couldn’t finish and that came back to haunt them.
All three Fire representatives to the All Star game played in the match. Defender Wilman Conde and midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco started the game and played 63 minutes and defender Bakary Soumare came on at the half and finished off the match. Having watched the match not too intently I would say that ‘Temo had the best match of the three but that the others held their own.
I may have a little report coming from my Dad who was at the game about his observations on the atmosphere, fanfare, etc. so keep on the look out for that later on.
