School, it ain't like it used to be. Where are all the books?
I loved having textbooks.

Today marks an exciting day on my road of advanced education and learning. I am proud to say that I have begun a new course to add to my fitness repertoire–the exciting and important field of Nutrition.  I got all my emails from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and in seeing all the links, decided the first thing I needed to do was give my assigned educational assistant a call to inform them to please send me the hard copy book. But guess what?

They don’t sell books on this subject.

“Yes, she explained very nicely. “Just follow the simple directions for the download and all of the materials will be right there at your fingertips.”

Not trying to sound like an outdated dinosaur, I fought back my frustration because I WANTED THE BOOK. I need to turn the pages. Tote it around with me. Have my multicolored highlighters. Create my index cards. You know, all the fancy stuff I amassed a fortune in student loan debt learning great study habits.

I couldn’t resist. I had to say it.

“You mean I can’t just buy a book???”

“No ma’am,” she said politely.  “What I can do is send you a link to download the book where you can print it out for free.”

Getting a hardcopy book is like finding fruit with seeds these days. What is the world coming to?

Okay, I thought to myself. Free is my budget and I can work with that. I’ll email it to my husband and have him print it at work, (should I have not said that?) and I can rock and roll that way.

Except the link was to where I could purchase a $30 book or ones with even higher costs! Now, ordinarily this wouldn’t be a problem, except she told me the link was to a free download, and my job is paying for the course.

Plus, all I wanna do is read my new book on Fitness Nutrition and add it to my growing library of fitness education books so that when I send in my student loan payments, I can at least feel somewhere near as smart as the debt I have because with the amount I owe, I could be a nuclear physicist, astronaut, cardiologist or something!!!

Well, after umpteen attempts to download the app to my MacBook which I didn’t know was iOS or MacBook or Win 7/9/10 or all the other hieroglyphics involved, I finally got to the online version.  And I suppose not having the hardcopy of the book helps save trees and avoids having more junk at the local thrift stores or filling up land mines, but I still wanted the book.

For me, there’s something magical and majestic about flipping the pages and having a book with dogged-eared creases on the ends. I like seeing all the pictures and getting the occasional dreaded paper cut.  For me that means I’m really focused.

But for now, I’ll just have to deal with my online book.

School. It ain’t like it used to be. Books must be a thing of the past.
