Jamal of 'Empire' makes it plain he's gay on Ellen and I'm okay with it. Are you?
Jussie Smollett plays Jamal on the Fox TV hit 'Empire.'

Today on Ellen, Jussie Smollet, who plays Jamal on the Fox TV hit show ‘Empire’, shared that “there is no closet” and that for him, “he’s never been in one.” He has a “dresser” but not a “closet.” While the actor did not come right out and say, “I am gay” he made it as plain as he could that he is. You can watch their conversation here.

I don’t know why he didn’t just turn to the camera and say, “I am gay,” but it’s clear that he is. Could it be that he doesn’t want the media frenzy that is inevitable after making such a declaration? Possibly. But no matter the reason, he chose to discuss this with Ellen in his own way.  That takes courage and I applaud him for that.

Surprisingly enough, I know many people will be shocked to learn that I have no problem with his sexuality.  I think people would be surprised to hear me, a God-fearing, Sunday school teacher say this. You see, church folk are taught that “homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of heaven” so they instantly and immediately condemn gay people. I’m not quite clear how they overlook slanderers, gluttons, liars, drunkards and a whole host of people with issues. I know I’m not like the average person. And I know I don’t have everything about life figured out. But I do know that love covers over a multitude of things.

I don’t know who is allowed to enter in through the pearly gates, but I do believe a better use of my time is living a life to be certain I gain entrance versus standing on a soapbox teaching who can’t.

I’m glad Jussie had the courage to make whatever statement he chose to make about his personal life. Which is just what it is: HIS personal life.

We used to sing a simple song in the small private school I attended as a child that said, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”  I wonder what the world would be like if we all just respected one another. I choose to emanate peace and harmony to all of God’s children, no matter their sexual preference.  I know the Bible says things that leave people feeling rejected and disqualified, but that’s only because people have added “secrets to the sauce.” The truth is: God loves everyone. Jussie said “My Momma know the truth, and she loves me.” And guess what Jussie? I do too.

Jamal, I’ll be watching you and the Lyons family Wednesday night at 8PM CST.

God bless you!
