Essential Fitness: The Best Workout North of Chicago

A few years ago my friend Kim started working out with Brian, a personal trainer from Essential Fitness who did home visits. Then Brian built his own studio for Essential Fitness and started offering group strength training classes. Then Kim become a personal trainer herself and began teaching her own classes at the studio! This past weekend a group of friends and I went north of Chicago to Grayslake to visit the Essential Fitness and get our butts kicked by Kim.

I’ve actually been to another group strength training class Kim taught as well as had a personal training session with Kim at the studio. And, you know, I lift weights on my own on a regular basis but it isn’t until I workout with Kim that I can feel myself getting stronger.

See, Kim (and Brian and the other trainers at Essential Fitness) are geniuses at coming up with workouts that work every part of your body. They keep it interesting and challenging but always make sure you’re doing the moves correctly and are just far enough of your comfort zone that you feel like you’re having fun but still getting a good workout.

For example, last week Kim informed our group that we would be doing a “bar crawl”. Yes, you read that right. But this is no bar crawl you’ve ever done. Nope. Instead we got down into a forearm plank (or on our hands and knees if the plank was too difficult) and then proceeded to crawl our way underneath a series of bars.

Let me just say that my abs were burning! But in a good way.

And Essential Fitness does more than just teach strength training classes. They are a supportive family of people who love to run, bike, and swim as well. Group bike rides and team races are just part of the fun you can join. Or you can just take classes or get personal training. Whatever you choose your body will thank you!

Now, if I could just figure out a way to teleport myself to Grayslake and back twice a week…
