The Easiest Way to Accomplish Your New Year's Resolution

The Easiest Way to Accomplish Your New Year's Resolution

Did you put “Run a 5K” on your New Year’s Resolution list this year?  What about “Run a half-marathon”?  I know back in 2009 I had at least one of those on my list.

Now, as someone who has run dozens upon dozens of races of all distances I know I love the atmosphere and the charge I get from being surrounded by so many other people out to cross the start line and finish come hell or high water.

But I also know that not everyone lives a life where they can join throngs of people at the start line of a race.  Whether it’s because where they live doesn’t offer a plethora of race options, because they feel anxious about participating in a racing event, or maybe they just prefer the solitude of running alone.

But no longer do people who aren’t able to enjoy the race atmosphere have to miss out on race perks!  That’s right, you can run (or walk) on your own and still earn that t-shirt and that finisher’s medal!

How, you ask?

By doing a virtual race!

Jim Parker at Muffins to Marathons personal training decided to start up the Fit 4 Life series of virtual races complete with t-shirts and finisher’s medals!

The first race was the New Year’s Rock’n Run 5K and those of us who were registered had between December 30th and January 2nd to complete the 5K distance.  I ran mine on December 31st after 10+ days of no exercise (except for one day of downhill skiing) and with a cold.  Let’s just say it wasn’t the best 5K I’ve ever run.

Still, I took my picture with my bib (yes, you even get a race bib) and submitted my time.

And then this morning I received my finisher’s certificate!

Those who register for the races and have Facebook accounts can join the Fit 4 Life Facebook group and post their finisher’s pictures, encourage one another, or ask for advice.  Much like a regular race!  There are also raffles and giveaways for those who are registered.

Plus, I’m looking forward to my race medal!

Does the idea of a virtual race sound appealing?  You can still register for the second two in the early season series (the Love on the Run 5K or the Run, Rock, Shamrock 5K)!  Looking for something a bit more challenging? Check out the Spring 2013 Race Series that offers everything from a 5K to a Half Marathon!

Want something even more?

Sometimes you need a little bit of motivation to get out there and move.  Jim and his team have put together a great way to channel the atmosphere of a race without the logistics that make it difficult for some people to participate.

So, if you have “Run a 5K” on your New Year’s resolution list, why wait?  Sign up for a virtual race now and get it crossed off!
