What to Buy at Trader Joe's

A reader sent me an e-mail wanting to know what my typical “allergy free style” shopping list looked like. Sadly I have to politely decline the free samples as they are usually made with things I can’t eat but I still heart Trader Joe’s for many reasons as you can see. Here’s a list of the things I typically buy:

  • Gluten-free waffles (which are seriously delicious and addictive)
  • Frozen spinach (I add it to smoothies and never taste it!)
  • Peanut Butter Lara Bars (peanuts are not an allergen for me)
  • Trader Joe’s Unsweetened Almond Milk (better for you than “milks” that come in those plastic lined Tetra Paks)
  • Gluten-Free Rolls (thankfully they have no eggs which I am also allergic too)
  • Wild Salmon (just say NO to farm-raised)
  • Vegan Natural Black Cherry Gel Cups (as my Dad would call this “Jello for hippies”)
  • Hummus of all shapes and sizes
  • Organic Peanut Butter
  • Endive and other greens
  • Tuscan Italian Salad Dressing
  • 100-calorie Dark Chocolate Bars (my favorite coping mechanism)
  • Coconut Water (especially in the summer time)
  • Black Beans (my favorite bean and use them a lot in winter casseroles)
  • Scallops and other white fish without seasonings or sauces
  • Frozen green peas
  • Organic turkey
  • Uncured turkey bacon
  • Tom’s of Maine Simply White Toothpaste
  • Preserve Toothbrushes
  • TJ’s Mandarin Orange Dish Soap
  • Split pea soup (makes for a great sauce on top of veggies)
  • TJs Organic Marinara Sauce
  • Blue Corn Chips
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder (I add it to smoothies)
  • Raw Honey
  • Yerba Mate
  • Raw Agave Nectar
  • TJ’s Laundry Detergent (the best out there especially for those of us with sensitive skin)
  • TJs Spirulina (seriously cheaper than a lot of other spurlinas and I can’t tell the difference)
  • TJs Natural Papaya & Pineapple Enzymes Digestive Enzymes
  • TJs Omega-3 Fatty acids (odorless and one of the few fish oil products that doesn’t make me burp)

Here’s the “booze and liquor” I appreciate from time-to-time.

I’m looking forward to these fall items:

Chestnuts (which are surprisingly delicious)
Pumpkin Puree (love it in vegan brownies)
Flowers, seriously TJs flowers are cheap and cheer up a girl in a lovely calorie-free way

Confessional: I usually buy my produce from ethnic marts like Harvest Time. I’m also not a fan of TJ’s brand of guacamole as it’s just too garlicy for me.
