2019 Volvo XC40 highlights:

– Starting price, including destination = $34,695 base front-drive turbocharged gas I-4, 8-speed automatic. As-tested higher output  T5 AWD R-Design = $45,935

– Volvo’s first personal “Cute Ute” is now the Swedish luxury brand’s entry level vehicle.  It is assembled in Belgium on the SPA architecture.

– A short octagonal grill with forward slashed alchemists steel symbol arrow, LED Thor’s Hammer alternating white DRLs / amber directionals, slight kammback liftgate and tall hockey-stick taillamps all are familiar Volvo SUV hallmarks. A lower profile spillover hood and available contrasting color dark roof, blended with a wide abruptly kinked C-pillar and wheels pushed farther out to the corners spell a distinctively hunkered down profile.

– Cockpit instruments & controls mostly parrot the larger XC60 / XC90: see the 12.3″ LCD virtual cluster, an absolute minimum of intuitively grouped physical switches, including dedicated audio volume and tuning / track advance controls. The same Sensus 9.0″ vertical tablet center stack touch LCD infotainment screen = 4 window home screen w/ physical home switch, swipe right to vehicle controls, swipe right to applications, swipe down for system settings, customization  and even video tutorials. Android Auto/ Apple Car Play = present and accounted for.

– Pliable dark plastic stitched panels are decorated with expected stiching. Seek not wood grains or hammered metal barrels as piano gloss black & “Cutting Edge” aluminum inlays stand in. $100 optional Orange Lava door-to-floor-to-door carpeting = Iris watering.

– Predominantly sueded nubuck + leather trimmed 12-way power, heated adjustable seats will envelope less then corpulent body morphs. 2nd Row cushions seem shallow and lack heating. Door pockets are pretty immense by class standards.  Low cargo floor liftover, a handy 2nd Row pass-through and cargo area power 2nd Row split 60/40% seatback release switches fortify cargo capacity which rivals some mid-size crossovers.

– Higher output T5 2.0L turbocharged DOHC transverse I-4 engine + 8-speed automatic gearbox = 240 hp / 258 lb-ft. Once past the long pedal travel, and  manumatic paddle shifting stifled before the rev limiter,  there is moderate urgency. Barely heard from the entombed cabin is the powerplant’s sewing machine soundtrack.

– Steering wind travel seems excessive and produces some low speed squeak. R-Design = faster damping + stiffer springing = taut ride, still top-heavy motions, subject to jounce from unruly pavement; 4-wheel sliding 1-pistion disc brakes = exhibit less than linear pedal reaction, losing grabbing steam at end of travel.

– observed 24 MPG misses EPA combined fuel economy estimates by 8%

– SAFETY = 7 Airbags; Standard rear camera w/ predictive grid; City Safety low speed collision and pedestrian avoidance braking;

AVAILABLE: Pilot Assist 2.0 partial autonomy w/ full adaptive cruise control, blind spot, lane departure & rear cross traffic warning, lane keep assist, forward collision avoidance braking, auto high-beam lights, proximity park warning, surround camera, Park Pilot assist.

– INCLUDED = 8-way driver’s, 4-way front pax power leather seats, keyless entry & ignition, power liftgate release, cruise control, full express soft close power windows x 4; 9″ touch LCD infotainment display, voice command HDD GPS Navigation, Bluetooth handsfree communications, text messaging, e-mail, Sensus apps & telematics, automatic climate control.

– MAJOR OPTIONS = Comfort access proximity power trunk release & side mirror retract, heated front seats & steering wheel, driver’s seat 2-position memory, panoramic moonroof, auto dimming mirrors, 2-zone climate control, Homelink, Harman Kardon audio.
