CTU Formalizes Garcia Endorsement For Mayor

CTU Formalizes Garcia Endorsement For Mayor
Coming off midterm elections in which a Quinn/Vallas vote was more than many members could stomach, CTU voted last night to formalize its surprise endorsement of Chuy Garcia over Bob Fioretti, the presumptive candidate they'd support after Karen Lewis dropped out. (The story was first reported in Substance, and then picked up by the Tribune.) Nationally, teachers unions are saying that Democrats lost, not their candidates in particular, and that reformers are perhaps over-celebrating given their losses in California and a few other places where reform and union candidates went head to head. Plus - lots about what Rauner does next, first, and where his challenges are...

Lewis Health Update This Afternoon, Says CTU

Lewis Health Update This Afternoon, Says CTU
There's supposed to be an update on Karen Lewis this afternoon, but otherwise no news that I can find. Meanwhile, City Hall plans to expand pre-K are getting fleshed out (it's been very popular in NYC, where Mayor de Blasio made it a central campaign pledge). Catalyst has a story about student fees that I'm sure is very good though I think I remember seeing a version in the Sun-Times or Tribune earlier this year (anyone remember?). Check it all out below.  Crossed fingers (and prayers, if that's your thing) for Lewis...

Want To Be A Fall 2014 Intern / Contributor?
As in the past, I’m looking for folks who might want to intern or contribute for District299 this fall. Maybe you’re a journalist in training of some kind — or a teacher in training.  Truth is, you can be a student, parent, teacher, or outside observer.  It doesn’t really matter.  And you don’t have to... 4 Already Banned from Board Meetings - You Could Be Next!
The Board has banned 4 people from monthly meetings, says DNA. Karen Lewis coverage continues -- including Jay Travis campaign leadership role. It's Kindergarten application time for all yo CPS newbie parents. Arne Duncan declaims Ray Lewis and other NFL players with domestic abuse allegations against them. Janitors, Politics, & Marshall High School

Janitors, Politics, & Marshall High School
Today's news includes more back and forth about the benefits of privatizing school custodial services, while at the same time there are concerns about the removal of the principal at Marshall (and potentially at other troubled schools). A Washington website looks at the impact of the Karen Lewis/Rahm Emanuel mudslinging on national unions and reform efforts...

Newark Visit, Fired Custodians, & 10th Day Enrollment
Hi, all:  The news of the day includes coverage of Karen Lewis in Newark (where an educator won the mayoral election recently -- but not control of the school system), news of the custodians being fired, and concern at some schools like Goethe where the 10th day attendance projections haven't been met yet (deadline's today!). Plus lots of national news about ed tech and privacy, plus school districts getting tanks from the Pentagon...

Lewis Disinclined To Step Down Fr. CTU Gig

Lewis Disinclined To Step Down Fr. CTU Gig
Today's big news is that CTU prez Karen Lewis told Catalyst that she doesn't think that she'd have to resign from her job if she ran in order to handle labor negotiations (a question teachers raised in a recent forum). Plus: TFA teachers are more diverse racially than traditional teachers over all (nationally).  Superintendents don't really matter, according to a new report (though they're nice to beat up on). Universal preschool rolled out pretty well in NYC this week. A relative handful of Newark parents boycotted school because the district's new universal choice program didn't work for them (and they hate Cami Anderson)...

Former Duncan Staffer Starts New Group

Former Duncan Staffer Starts New Group
There’s a new, national education group launching today — and most of its main players are from or based in Chicago. Described as “a nonprofit group that plans to launch Tuesday with the aim of encouraging a more “respectful” and fact-based national discussion about the challenges of public education, and possible solutions,” the $12 million organization is funded... Mayor Names New Education Deputy

Mayor Names New Education Deputy
Big news of the day is that Arnaldo Rivera will replace Beth Swanson as education deputy at City Hall -- anybody know or worked with him? Also: They're selling old CPS buildings.  There's a new principals' advocacy group. Roughly 900 CPS teachers aren't fully licensed -- and some unknown number are mismatched with their assignments.  What else -- you ready for the year to start yet...
