Montgomery wards off Giants in Cubs 5-1 win

Eddie Butler went 5 innings and Mike Montgomery went the final 4 as the Cubs took their third straight game from the Giants by a score of 5-1.  Kris Bryant, Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist all hit solo homers for the Cubs.  The Cubs scored their other runs on a wild pitch and a Buster Posey throwing error.

The win put Eddie Butler’s record at 2-0 while Mike Montgomery recorded the very rare 4 innings save.  I can’t remember when I last saw one of those.  Giants starter and loser, Jeff Samardzija’s record now stands at 1-6.  It looks like Jeff will never reach the heights many thought he would.

It’s to the point in the White Sox season where it’s becoming more interesting to see what’s going on down on the farm.  With that in mind, good news. High profile prospect, Lucas Giolito pitched a no hitter for the Charlotte Knights.  A few things to keep in mind about the no hitter:  It was the first game of a double header so it was only 7 innings.  He also walked 3 while striking out only 3.  It’s still great to see, but it’s also nothing to get carried away about.  It reminds me that Phil Humber pitched a perfect game for the Sox and then soon disappeared.

The fact that the Sox signed Cuban free agent, Luis Robert, could jump start the Sox progress.  Yoan Moncada, Jose Abreu and Sox manager, Ricky Renteria, were all involved in the presentation.  I feel that having Renteria as the Sox manager was a real help in this case.  Renteria did a good job with the Cubs and his a good fit with the White Sox.  I just wish he would bunt less often.

The Arizona Cardinals will apparently go into the season with Carson Palmer and Blaine Gabbert at quarterback.  I see Arizona as a place that could have used Jay Cutler.  To me Carson Palmer is like Jay Cutler with a weaker arm and less mobility.  Plus Blaine Gabbert is still Blaine Gabbert.  Who knew that a picture of a bare butted Jay Cutler was his NFL swan song?

Another former Bears quarterback, Josh McCown, is now with the Jets.  I think that Josh has a chance to be the white Geno Smith.  Jets fans have a lot to look forward to.  (Jay Cutler could have helped the Jets too.)

It looks like Dwyane Wade will opt into the final years of his contract with the Bulls.  Great news.  The Bulls will pay a guy who sometimes looks like Grady from Sanford and Son 24 million dollars to criticize younger players.  It’s a good thing the Bulls decide to get younger and more athletic.

More next time.
