Civil war, we’re told. But only because black and left-wing activists are rational and peaceful are we avoiding a civil war. In other words, those crazy, gun-loving rightwingnuts are irrational and violent, unlike the sainted left.
Eric Zorn asks in a recent column whether, “Kenosha could spark an armed escalation if activists on the left embrace their right to wield guns”. A Philadelph Enquirer columnist solemnly warns, “A killing, chaos in Portland as Trump’s reelection scheme of a civil war shifts into overdrive.”|I’ll boil it down to three words: It’s Trump’s fault. In it we read about the “Republican convention that at times celebrated vigilantism as much as it deified President Trump,”
Still more: In the Washington Monthly, we’re informed that: “White Supremacists Are Invading American Cities To Incite a Civil War.” Anguished Hollywood icon Spike Lee asks the “stunning question” on CNN: “‘Are We Headed for Civil War?”
Guess that’s the new talking point, fortified by the likes of Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old charged with murdering two people in Kenosha.
But the reality is that the left has armed itself. The hysterical left-wing Daily Beast said it has in, “Meet the Gun Club Patrolling Seattle’s Leftist Utopia. It reports:
Members of the Puget Sound John Brown Gun Club (PSJBGC)—a leftist community defense and firearms education organization that gained a spate of notoriety last year when a former member, Willem van Spronsen, set fire to an ICE parking lot—have been a constant presence. The club is often asked to provide security for protests and rallies around the Seattle area, and while their involvement in CHAZ is structured more loosely, the presence of armed civilians has raised a few eyebrows.
Leftist gun clubs have been on the rise, and organizations like the Socialist Rifle Association—of which, full disclosure, I am a member—Huey P. Newton Gun Club, Trigger Warning Queer & Trans Gun Club, and other chapters of the John Brown Gun Club have successfully introduced the issue of gun rights and firearms education into the broader leftist discourse. In Seattle, John Brown members have generally been showing up on an individual basis, rather than as part of a coordinated campaign. But as Nick—the group’s towering spokesperson, who like other members requested his full name be withheld given law enforcement’s fixation on left-wing activists—told The Daily Beast, the group was also tapped to provide a security escort for “some very prominent black voices who were doing speeches here at the Autonomous Zone” following the events of last Sunday evening.
Some more notorious examples: The armed leftists guarding the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) . And this outrage: A couple of armed members of the New Black Panthers Party intimidating voters while standing outside a Philadelphia polling place in 2008.
The proving ground is Portland, where pro-Trump protestor Aaron “Jay” Danielson, was fatally shot when left-wing and right-wing demonstrators clashed. The Trump supporters were in a car parade, some of whom were firing paintballs at the left-wing demonstrators. The other side was throwing stuff back. Although that’s not enough to justify a killing, now an “innocent bystander” is suing someone for $250,000 because she was hit by a paintball.
Coming to mind is Newton’s Third Law of Motion: “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” I’m not excusing violence from either side, but let’s keep in mind the months and months of violence inflicted on the innocent and small businesspeople while some police were ordered to set aside. When law is not enforced, individuals will be encouraged to take the law into their own hands. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind.
