As if rising from their wheelchairs and tossing aside their walkers, Baby Boomers are extolling Disco Demotion Night as a “cultural touchstone.”
If so, it’s their touchstone, because many of the rest of us (speaking only for some of us in the pre-Baby Boomer generation) thought it was an idiotic demonstration of where Baby Boomers were taking us.
Leisure suits and bell bottoms. Acid. John Kerry. Hyper individualism. Unraveling cultural norms. Today, we’re living the dream.
Disco Demolition Appreciation Night is a trip back to the generation’s hubris, marked by dictum, “Never trust anyone over 30.” It should have special meaning to the Baby Boomers now that they are twice that age.
