The “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.” (S.744) is merely 844 pages long, so it’s good to have help from the non-partisan National Conference of State Legislatures to understand the proposed legislation, section by section.
Use it (the summary is here) to settle those bar fights about what’s in the bill. If its 37 pages still is too much to digest, read a two-page summary of the summary here. If you’re not a trusting sort, read the entire bill for yourself here.
This is the bi-partisan bill that Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced on April 17, negotiated by the “gang of eight”–Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), and Schumer).
What do I think of the bill? I haven’t read it, like most people. For the conference’s opinion about immigration, go here. (It’s not short either.)
