Do you know what's in the 'compromise' federal immigration bill?

The “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.” (S.744) is merely 844 pages long, so it’s good to have help from the non-partisan National Conference of State Legislatures to understand the proposed legislation, section by section.

Use it (the summary is here) to settle those bar fights about what’s in the bill. If its 37 pages still is too much to digest, read a two-page summary of the summary here. If you’re not a trusting sort, read the entire bill for yourself here.

This is the bi-partisan bill that Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced on April 17, negotiated by the “gang of eight”–Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), and  Schumer).

What do I think of the bill? I haven’t read it, like most people.  For the conference’s opinion about immigration, go here. (It’s not short either.)

  • Question of the day.....will any of our elected officials voting on this piece of legislation read the entire bill? They didn't bother with the ACA, as long as their one paragraph of concessions was included in the 2000 page mess, they were happy. Nobody seems to know what the law is or what it is supposed to be, and that is incredibly disturbing. Most of the gang on capital hill are lawyers themselves, and they don't even bother to understand what they are supporting and imposing on the rest of us. What a mess! Thanks for the link however, as I probably will try to wade through it and pit my puny intelligence against its subtle genius.
