Looking Back: My 40 Bold NHL Predictions

Back in October, before the 2014-15 NHL season started, I made 40 bold predictions.

So, let’s see how I did. Note: the NHL Awards that will be voted on are left as-is unless, in the case of the Vezina, the winner is easily assumed.

Hart Trophy: Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay
Art Ross Trophy: Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Jamie Benn, Dallas
Ted Lindsay Award: John Tavares, New York Islanders
Norris Trophy: Drew Doughty, Los Angeles
Vezina Trophy: Ben Bishop, Tampa Bay Carey Price, Montreal (assumed)
Jack Adams Award: Barry Trotz
Calder Trophy: John Gibson, Anaheim (doubtful)
Selke Trophy: Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles
Lady Byng Award: Patrick Kane, Chicago
Messier Leadership Award: Jonathan Toews, Chicago
GM of the Year: Jim Nill, Dallas should go to Chuck Fletcher, Minnesota

Atlantic Division Champion: Tampa Bay Lightning Montreal Canadiens
Metropolitan Division Champion: Washington Capitals New York Rangers
Central Division Champion: Dallas Stars St. Louis Blues
Pacific Division Champion: Anaheim Ducks
Presidents Trophy: Anaheim Ducks New York Rangers

First Coach Fired: Todd McLellan, San Jose – Dallas Eakins, Edmonto
Biggest Improvement – Team: New York Islanders – CORRECT
Biggest Decline – Team: Colorado – CORRECT
Best Free Agent/Trade Addition – Nick Leddy, New York Islanders – debatable
Most Disappointing Free Agent/Trade Addition – James Neal, Nashville – probably not
Detroit will not make the playoffs
Jamie Benn will be the top point producer in the Western Conference – CORRECT
Steven Stamkos will be the top point producer in the Eastern Conference – John Tavares, NYI
4 players will top 95 points – 0
6 defensemen will top 60 points – 3
Joe Thornton will get traded by the Sharks – he didn’t

The NHL will announce expansion plans for 2 new teams before the Winter Classic – not yet
The Buffalo Sabres will not have the worst record in the NHL – they did
Marc-Andre Fleury will not finish the season in Pittsburgh – he did, and signed an extension
Martin Brodeur will not finish the season retired – he DID play… but then retired
The Carolina Hurricanes won’t finish the season with 2 Staal brothers on their roster – they did
At least 2 captains will be traded during the season
The Chicago Blackhawks will make more than two in-season trades – CORRECT
Fewer than 40 players will be suspended (45 were suspended during the 2013-14 season) – postseason pending…
Taylor Hall will win the All-Star Game MVP

Postseason Predictions:

Eastern Conference Final: Tampa Bay vs. New York Islanders
Western Conference Final: Chicago vs. Los Angeles
One of the two top seeds will get knocked out in the first round of the playoffs
5 head coaches will get fired before the Stanley Cup is clinched in 2015
