Hard to Be a Saint in the City: New Orleans at Chicago Game Thread

REMINDER! DABEARSBLOG IS MOVING! We are leaving ChicagoNow effective November 1st. We will be housed exclusively at www.dabearsblog.com from that date (and perhaps sooner) on.

Three final thoughts on today’s game:

  • Don’t discount the importance of the Saints not having a running attack. I can’t see Brees dropping back, throwing it forty-plus times and managing to keep the Bears offense from scoring. Reggie Bush was the reason Detroit controlled the Bears for two and a half quarters.
  • Been spoking of to death but Bears need a pass rush today. Without a pass my prediction of thirty points might not be enough. They may need forty.
  • Good news. After a lengthy session with Noah yesterday I am pleased to announce the new and far improved DBB will be ready for action well ahead of the November 1 deadline.  We’re sticking with that date to attempt a seamless transition.

Bearing down is the new twerking.

  • First pull out their teeth, then shave heads, then feed them to the pigs. Bears win!

    I shall Bear down....
    But I will not twerk.
    Go Bears and....
    Stay Tough!

  • And now, a word from our sponsor....
Bears really need to win this game,
and we're not just a lyin'...
It would be a cryin' shame,
to lose to that slob, Rob Ryan.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

No lie Al. + a lot.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Good one Al. Not to mention I agree with your post at the end of the last thread. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that Old Sauce and Toub left when Lovie got canned. Marinelli is fiercely loyal and Toub interviewed for the HC job and wasn't selected. I wish both of them would have stayed.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

    Thx, Canada.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

  • BEAR DOWN!!!

  • Really hope the Bears figured out how to hold the point of attack on defense. The fashion in which they were getting blown out of their gaps was embarrassing last week. If they can't stop Pierre Thomas and Saints run game, it's only going to get worse as the season goes on.

The game is going to come down to three factors:

    1. Turnovers
    2. Red Zone efficiency
    3. 3rd down conversions

  • In reply to Shady:

Sproles and Graham. If we can neutrlize one of them we're good. If we can hold both of them to just so-so output we win. If they both have good games we lose. If they both go off, we lose badly.

We've got to get the run game going early and keep the ball away from them. If Podlesh sucks moose wang again today, we'll have a new punter Thursday against the G-Men.

  • i predict a great game and a bears victory.

    Cutler 275yds 3tds 1int 90+ rating

    Defense gets a big turnover.

    No one burned on Specials.

  • In reply to Waffle:

    Hope you're right Johnny!

  • megatron out for the lions today. I may put a bet on this one. For the Lions of course to ensure that they lose.

  • A bit random, but every team should have a call on offense to sprint, not hurry, but SPRINT up to the line and snap the ball ASAP. If an offense has a big play that could be subject to a challenge, offenses need to be able to get the next play off ASAP so the previous play can't be reviewed. I've seen it several times alrerady this season where an offense walks up to the line, the QB surveys the field, the snap count is more that 1 hut, and they play ends up coming back because of a challenge at the last moment. Sometimes just snapping the ball to prevent a challenge of the previous play is more important than anything else the offense could do on the following play.

  • OK R2 where's my link?

  • I am off to my local watering hole to watch the game.

    Bear Down, Chicago Bears!

  • I have the site bookmarked. No more redirect to CN. I cant wait to see whats in store for us. Bear Down baby!!!!

  • Bearing Down.

    Let's kick some ass, boys.

  • Bear down!

  • Paea is inactive today. We got no DT's. Chance for some new guys to step up.

  • No chat room today?

  • I call horseshit that the troops overseas are getting shafted on watching football due to the government shutdown.

  • lol, apparently the turf is fucking atrocious.

must attack downhill today and make them make cuts that they are used to making surgically on field turf and not our poopy turf.

  • We got Joe Buck?
I need a dtv dvr to sync the radio delay

  • Awesome start, Forte.

  • Oh boy. Not looking good for the home team.

  • Ugh, gonna be another long Sunday.

  • Bullet dodged

  • Trestman, call a motherfucking play that allows the Jay to get the ball out of his hands quickly for fucks fucking sake.

If you're going to move the pocket move it fucking fast and get the ball off quickly. That is a shit fucking playcall.

  • In reply to Waffle:

who is calling these fucking plays? Martz? Tice? what the fuck. It's not fucking brain surgery. make the DB's and LB's make fucking plays on our monsters for gods fucking sake.

  • In reply to Waffle:

It's Jay pulling the damn ball down, throw it away Jay

  • In reply to gpldan:

The Saints have no problem throwing a 6yd pass to their TE on first down why the fuck do we? We have Brandon fucking Marshall. Why the fuck isn't he being used? Don't tell me this is on Jay Cutler. That half assed roll out play was ludicrous.

Only artoo and tobi in there !

  • Jay forcing it

  • I thought the Saints didn't have a running game...

  • In reply to tobijohn:

Everybody have a running game against us. Everybody!

Do we'll score today? I don't think so..

  • trestman is losing us this game.

    Call a quick hitting PASSSWSSSSSSSSS

  • Jay sacked 3 times already

  • Forte whiffing on blocks, and his running today consisting of his patented stutter steps.

  • The fact that Martellus Bennett has been targeted 0 times is a failure of the coaching staff. The fact that Marshall has 1 catch is embarassing.

  • Is it possible Kromer is a tard or owes Payton a favor?

  • whatever it is, its very disappointing

  • Nice Weems you pos

  • thats it, once again waiting for the administrator to approve my comment. this change cant come soon enough. I tried, I'm off to Artoos chat site where I can carry on a conversation. Later Gents!

  • If Martellus or Marshall is not targeted on 1st or 2nd down here I will be amazed.

  • Put Bush in establish run

  • In reply to gpldan:

    absolutely not

throw fucking quick hitting playcation to your 6'6 TE for gods sake

  • graham 6 catches 95 yards.

    m. bennet 1 catch 3 yards.

  • In reply to Waffle:

I hate to point out the obvious but Brees is better than Cutler and Graham is better than Bennett.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

you don't have to be Drew fucking Brees to throw a 6 yard post up to a 6'6 TE. holy shit.

  • Alshon. Jeffrey.

    Love me some big WRs.

  • Conte and Wright don't stand a chance is the Bears can't get pressure on Brees.

  • That screen was so textbook it was right out of Madden 25

    saints just a better team

  • Unless we get some turnovers we're fucked. I have no illusions about this team. When we play a better than avg team the only way we win is the Lovie formula, ST's and TO's. When we play a really good team we need divine intervention. DAMN!

  • No idea what's going on with the blocking, Cutler got hit way too much. Did they not expect the blitz? Gonna be hard for Jay to play well if things don't improve up front.

  • pep is softer than Bradley Mannings penis

  • that conversion was the game

  • Melton gone
    Paea out
    Now Collins down

  • Collins done. Defense is fucked.

  • We were done long before that. This will just speed up the process.

  • Alshon Jeffrey strikes again.

  • They tripled Marshall and doubled Jeffries and jay couldn't check down

  • In reply to gpldan:

the checkdown was blocking in max protect.

  • The Saints can run for yards behind Evans whenever they please.

  • We're averaging 4.6 yds/carry. We're not running because ...

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

    we're averaging 1.5 yards on 1st down

  • Saints average over 7.5 yards on 1st down. Bears D can't stop anyone on 3rd down. This is tough to watch. tough to fucking watch.

  • In reply to Waffle:

All the more reason to run the ball.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Use you motherfucking huge weapons that Trestman managed to ignore the entire first fucking half.

  • In reply to Waffle:

ergo, they effectively took away obvious passing downs from our defensive playcalling.

  • The Bears inability to run is disturbing.

  • In reply to Shady:

    There they go.

  • You have to kick the FG here, right? I suppose now that they've taken a TO they'll go for it.

  • Ahem.

  • Earl with a drop in a huge spot? What the hell is going on?

  • Oh earl, no Cadillac 4u

  • Turn out the lights. Should have kept pounding the rock..

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

    you're delusional.

  • In reply to Waffle:

Of all people on this board to say that. We're averaging over 5 yds/carry. We're getting killed in TOP. Our D hasn't stopped them all day. Yeah lets keep throwing the ball for some quick 3 and outs and put the D back on the field.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

when we throw short passes to our TE's and WR's we don't fucking go 3 and out.

  • In reply to Waffle:

Last time I checked if you can run the ball it will pay off later in games AND keep the other team's O off the field. So if we have a few short gains or no gains early in the game we should abandon the run? OK, sure.

  • In reply to Waffle:

One last thing, when I posted that we marched down the field running (we had one or two passes at the most). We get to 3rd and 2 and try two passes that fail. I'm pretty sure we pick up that 1st down running. Oh well.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I was saying the same thing at the bar. Earl's drop was huge though.

That early turnover also changed the stategy of the game.

  • In reply to Cormonster:

I just wish we'd make an honest attempt to pound the rock when we play explosive O's. It should be obvious the D is good in the red zone but can't get off the field between the 20's. We had a bunch of stops for losses today but then turn around and give up 5-15 yds/play the rest of the time. Really frustrating. Not to mention the D is out there for 35+ minutes/game. If the G-men march up and down the field on us I'm going to be clinically depressed.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Don't get depressed if that happens. Just start taking Adderall. It's like a combination of the best coke and ecstasy combined in one pill. At least that's what all the young guys who work for me say.

  • Now Lance? Dafuq?!?

  • WTF this defense is petrified of this Saints offense...what a fuckin joke. FUCK. And we have to listen to the two worst announcers in "put me in the Buck' and Ache for man...fuckity fuck fuck

  • Despite their performance against the Lions and Saints, I still think the Bears win enough of the rest of their games to lose in the first round of the playoffs..

  • In reply to tobijohn:

    Will 8-8 get us in?

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

NFC East, yes, NFC North, no. Assuming no more major injuries, I still think they'll finish at least 10-6..

  • Trestman has to learn to call a full fucking game. Jesus fucking christ. Just watch the saints to learn how to fucking call plays on first and second down. fucking please do that for me.

  • Stupid fucking mistakes (most notably Earl and Lance). This was a winnable game.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

don't forget Trestman doing his best to spot the saints as many points as possible heading into the 2nd half.

could we have tried harder to not score in the first half?

  • In reply to Waffle:

Players play, coaches coach. Unless Trestman dropped playbook in the Saint's locker room, this ones on the players. I listened to the game, no DTV. How did Cutty perform? Can you give e an honest assessment of Jay's play?

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

He had a higher rating than Brees, So i'd say he played pretty well.

  • Fuck Fuck Fuck.

  • Yup, the Bears turned in another floater of a performance. At least the cheese spanked the lions. 3 way tie for first place for about a week. Then we officially start sinking to the bottom of the pool and it ain't gonna be a Baby Ruth bar. This season all of a sudden is looking like Phil got one over on us.

  • Well Jeffery broke Johnnie Morris' single game receiving record of 201 with 212 yards.

That one will stand for a long, long time.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Did the Bears lose that game as well?

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

Come on Trac, keep your chin up:

  • In reply to tobijohn:

That's the most pathetic example of encouragement I've ever witnessed. lol

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

    That made me laugh.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

Maybe this will cheer you up!

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Wow, I'm impressed. Where do you find these? Art is in the eyes of the beholder I guess but I miss the golden age of everything.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

I absolutely love early R&B. It was basically rock 'n roll with all black people. Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Big Joe Turner, etc. Once all the young white cats caught on and did covers of their songs, it became rock 'n roll.

Here's a cover version of one of my all-time favorite songs (from a totally different genre). Richard Thompson is a poet, killer guitarist, all round nice guy and a good singer. This version is by Bonnie Raitt with the Blind Boys of Alabama singing backup.

The second link is Richard doing the song live.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

One last one of Richard Thompson. Love the lyrics about a woman getting on in years. I love the way he plays rhythm and lead at the same time.

  • In reply to gpldan:

It would have been nice if he didn't do it against my FF team this week.

I think Marshall is more injured than anyone's letting on.

That pass drop by Earl was brutal.

  • Earl looked like he was about to cry after that drop.

Side note. Chicken Dinner should not be on the field.

  • If the Bears lose to the G-Men, is the season officially in the crapper?

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

Nah. I think we'll be in the hunt all year.

    Here's my take on it. G-men @ home=W, Skins away=W, Pack away=L, Kitties@home=W, Ravens@home=L, Rams away=L, Queens away=L, Dallas@home=W, Browns away=L, Eagles away=W, Pack @ home=L. Add it all up and we're 8-8.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

Don't know if it will be time to flush, but the G-men looks like the easiest game of the season. Even St. Louis and the Clowns should be a sterner test.

  • I still dont understand Briggs breaking into the neutral zone. WTF Lance!

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

Horrible penalty but Briggs otherwise had a monster game: 14 TTs, 11 solo, one sack. W/out him we are probably down three scores with four minutes to go.

  • We are who we thought we were.

    A wild card team.

To be honest, I am not totally crestfallen. They played OK, just crucial mistakes from the very first snap. Turnovers, offsides, drop passes. The defense I thought held up, especially early on. They showed some pressure, just couldn't get Brees down.

There's really no consistency on either side of the ball. We're not a run team; we're not a pass team; we're not a D/SP teams team.

The Bears lack identity, which is to be expected with a new coach.

We're a WC team. Saints are arguably best NFC team right now. We only lost by 8, though it never really felt all that close because the Bears seem always to be trailing.

Dust it off, win the games vs teams who are not even WC teams, and we can still win the division.

Hopefully, the Trestman Bears can create an identity and gain some momentum in the meanwhile.

  • I said cut Pep this offseason, eat his commit - which wasn't much - and free up ~$10M and use it to upgrade the line.

Pep is far more injured than anybody knows. The flu thing was air cover by Trestman - but that guy is not showing up again - not this season, not any season. What I saw out there from him was BAD, real bad so much so that when we put Cohen out there we stepped up quite a bit.

If it's his legs - which I suspect it is - then it's now time to move him inside. It's what they did with Hampton. Hampton literally crawled his way to sacks at times, but he could foul the run inside even with no knees. With Collins potentially down it's time to shuffle the line - hit the reset button.

McClellin is a decent inside 3-4 LB in the AJ Hawk mold. Making him be a 4-3 end is painful to watch but Emery's ego is not ready to admit mistake.

I said this last week - using Eben Britton as a blocking TE, effectively putting 6 man offensive lines out there and then often holding Forte in to block is putting too much pressure on everyone else. We either need to swing Forte out of the backfield more and we need to move BMarsh outside and Earl inside. Why Earl is playng FL escapes me, he's not got scaring safeties and they are crowding inside.

I also stand by Canada and think early game you need to line Flametta up and run more I-form sets and bash the middle with Long. We ran pathetically today, but we ran almost always from singleback gun on the draw. It's a change up formation, but Kromer has made it the bread and butter formation. No way.

You crash the front four head on in the first and pound them, even if you don't pick up the first down always, the offense punished the D early, make them tired - make them hurt. We never took the ball into them except a few times with Bush and it usually went decently.

Soldier Field turf makes running slant-ins tough, it's hard to get separation on that field. Gotta run the ball straight ahead.

  • Just remember everybody. It's not about who looks the best in October. It's who is hot going into the playoffs. I'm not so deluded as to think we are a superbowl contenders right now. But we've been in every game with a first year head coach. I see no reason that we can't be a better team late in the year when the guys have figured it out and gotten into a groove. Our Defense is still good but not great. Our offense is much improved with two rookies on the O-line, Jeffery playing great, Forte playing great, Cutty playing decent, Marshall commanding double teams and still playing well, Black Unicorn playing well, Earl had the drops but he's usually money and will bounce back. There's no reason to think this isn't going to be a top 5-8 offense. If our defense can pick it up a bit and Hester has a few timely run backs, we can play with anybody.

It sucks to lose. It sucks that we yet again lose to an elite team. But I'm not cashing in my chips. The offensive improvement alone is reason enough to be encouraged. We're still tied for first in our division with very winnable games on the horizon. Let's not freak out too much boys. Whether the storm. Stay positive.

  • Dallas/Denver game an Arena league score 48-48. With about two minutes left, Denver's punter has yet to touch the ball...
