Why I Hate Training Camp: A Personal Confession

Why I Hate Training Camp: A Personal Confession

I got into a bit of a tiff on Twitter the other day. I wouldn’t call it a scuffle. Certainly not a melee. It was what it was: a tiff. I’d had a few Narragansetts (which I drink because Robert Shaw drank them in Jaws) and a bit of New England’s finest sometimes frees me to say the silly things I’m thinking on that most social of social media. So I said it. I hate training camp and think it’s irrelevant.

First, let me explain. I do not begrudge any fan who finds pleasure in attending or following camp. We all love football and, more specifically, the Chicago Bears. From the end of each season we clamor for our boys to step back onto the football field and training camp is truly the first time they gather as a unit. And I especially don’t begrudge the families who enjoy these training camp sessions as an affordable opportunity to experience Bears football.

But I hate training camp. And there are many reasons.

  • Everything now gets overblown. Because the media knows fans are clamoring for every piece of information available they utilize Twitter to report every single piece of information. So fans now hear about every PRACTICE drop, PRACTICE fumble, PRACTICE missed block and draw inane conclusions from it. (Fans were already calling Shea McClellin a bust yesterday. After his fourth practice. Second in pads.)
  • This is an era where the NFL has gone completely top secret. Nobody shows anybody anything and everybody lies. To think an NFL franchise would display any plays/schemes of relevance in front of fans or media – all armed with devices capable of taking extensive video – seems naive. We are basing a majority of our opinions on work  most likely never to be seen in the light of game day.
  • It all gets wiped clean on Week One. All of it. If J’Marcus Webb beats out Chris Williams for the left tackle gig this summer and allows three sacks to Robert Mathis in Week One, he’s going to lose his job. If Shea McClellin struggles all summer and plants Andrew Luck on a big third down in Week One, he’s going to find himself in the rotation. The reps and installations are important. The results are essentially wiped clean once the games start.
  • Risk/Reward. You can’t win a Super Bowl in training camp. You can prepare your team well for the start of a season but even starting a season well, as we’ve seen in recent times, has no baring on your year-end success. What can you do in training camp? Watch it all go down in flames with a single turning of the wrong player’s knee

There’s more but I’ll stop there. It’s not that I don’t love the re-infusion of Bears football into my life. I do. It’s that I have a very low tolerance for the overreaction and over-analysis that accompanies what amounts to glorified practice sessions. Evan Rodriguez is a God. Shea McClellin stinks. Stephen Paea is going to be the next great defensive tackle. Blah blah blahbeddy blah.

Learn the systems. Entertain the crowds. Stay healthy. The rest I’ll leave to other folks.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

I'm pretty much with you on your entire post, Jeff.

To anyone here that would argue that Twitter has made the world a better place, I'd just have to say au contraire mon frere.

  • We all get caught up in this era of "instant news" I always go back and remember the 85 Bears were 1-3 in pre-season. If there would have been twitter back then, I'm sure doom and gloom would have been projected. I know a lot of us were not happy and really shocked when they pick Shea Mc in the first round. I hope all the tweets on his struggles are proved wrong when the season starts. I'm excited and look forward to when we play some football. I know we are gonna be lighting up the score board this year! Bear Down Brothas!

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

Maybe, just maybe... in this era of super secret NFL, he's playing like sauteed garbage on purpose! We'd hate for the other teams to know that our 1st round pick is actually good at football! Boy oh boy will they be surprised.

Irish, can I get a conspiracy clap?

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

It's like a soul clap, only more erratic...

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

Hey, if I come back to Omaha for a visit in October, I'll buy you a beer - you find the place to watch the game.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Except you probably have a three-hour commute into the city...didn't you say you're out in bumblefart West O now?

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Hahaha... I'm there! I'll drive like the Wolf if I need to.

Chances are, you know the spots better than me. I have only watched games out and about once... usually at home.

DJ's Dugout was the spot. I was surrounded by enemies on all sides.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

I'll hook you up. I'll keep you posted as to which weekend I'll be there.

  • Interesting:

  • In reply to lobotobear:

YES! I was going to post about it. I know it's practice and everything but if the coaches are happy with him @ this point there is reason tto be excited about what he can do when the season begins!

  • FUCK TWITTER!!!! I would rather see the marathon rather than the sprint any day...not sure if this has been posted yet but a great overview of a fan just like us...

    and btw..

IT'S FUCKING TRAINING CAMP!!!! what part of "training" don't you get your fucking neanderthals!!!!

  • In reply to lobotobear:

Yep, Roy has some interesting stuff on camp, which he has attended with none other than our own Artoo. Nice one Erik.

Devin Thomas hasn't impressed, McLellin obviously hasn't. Jay and B look good. James Brown looks good apparently ... I'm sure Artoo will chime in.

  • 6'5 Chris Summers is apparently putting the pressure on Devin Thomas and Sanzy too.

  • +1, Blogfather. ESPECIALLY the "Stay Healthy".

  • It's been a while boys!
I've been hibernating this off-season and I'm staring to roll around a bit now that a certain team from a certain town has been running around on the practice field in nowhere, IL. I share your feelings about training camp with regard to the overblown hype spewed out by the media. But hey, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't constantly checking for updates about my beloved. I guess I'm almost cringing every time I do, hoping there are no serious injury reports.

I'm just hoping for an overall healthy roster when it is all said & done. Then we get to the meat of it, the real shit...Bear Down!

Can't wait to rock Da Bears Brothers T out here at 710 Beach Club in Diego.

  • In reply to MatthewIsMyForte:

    welcome back mainge

  • They have signs up in camp that say "no video". In today's world of 10 megapixel cellphones, I have no idea how they would enforce that - but they say it.

Oh yeah... Chicken Dinner is a bust.

  • I agree with your analysis of twitter but I'm hurting so bad for Bears news. I'm reading the Trib and Sun Times in addition to this fine blog, I've even been to the team website a couple times to watch camp highlights.

I thought last year was the longest offseason but this year is proving me very wrong. I'm just jonesing(spelling?) for some preseason at this point, wanna see my team in action, even if it's fake. Then I'll be Jonesing for the opener. Football needs to hurry up and get here.

  • In reply to ben in norcal:

Did you watch or read the other blogs on CFT? That should keep you occupied for awhile.

  • Indeed, I've been reading everything. Need footlballl.

  • Jeff -

Did you take that picture of the water tower from the pictures I posted? The angle and the time of day make it seem like you did. Thanks.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Can I use the pictures you have taken so far? I would credit you if you sent me your name.

  • Go ahead. Attribution not necessary.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Get this man his fucking royalty check!

  • He looks impressive. Go figure...

  • In reply to gpldan:

I really...really wanted the Bears to get Mercilus.

  • There you two go, as if to prove Jeff's point. :-)

It's early boys. Only time will tell who made the better draft pick. Or who ultimately pans out to be the Bears' best choice this season.

It would be nice, however, were a first round pick to pan out long term for the Bears. 2000 was a long time ago.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

It's early boys. Only time will tell who made the better draft pick. Or who ultimately pans out to be the Bears' best choice this season.

If we can't wantonly speculate and 2nd guess management and make wild, unsupported pronouncements and gross generalizations - then what's the fun of the blog? Fantasy Football? Mb's Youtube links? Conspiracy theories?

Me thinketh Jeff doth protest too much. He should let us idiots play happily in the mud.

  • In reply to gpldan:

  • In reply to gpldan:

agree with GP 100%. And yes, my youtube links prop this place up in the offseason. You're welcome.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Okay, okay. Will it look like this?

  • In reply to SC Dave:

my god I hope so... except for that last one... that one is nasty.

  • I thought they would pick W.M. but wasn't pulling for anyone. I'm not upset with S.M. Way too early for that stuff.

Gotta admit I'm excited that camp has started but try not to get too excited over any of it (good and bad).

  • Now that we are saying who we wanted, I was a Nick Perry backer. So we have a Mercilus and a Perry. anyone else want to chime in on who they would have picked from available players when the Bears took "Big Chicken!"

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

I think we can all agree that the Bears could not have erred by choosing Riley Rieff at OT. Yes, RILEY RIEFF was available at the time. It was like fucking christmas and Emery goes off and picks McClellin.

I tried to rationalize the pick. I said to myself, "self, maybe Emery is a fucking racist (but then he passed on Riley Rieff). Maybe Nick Perry banged his daughter at school (but then I realized that she did not attend USC and couldn't know him much less bang him). Maybe it was discovered that Mercilus was actually Gaines Adams and no one knew it because he was wearing Lebrons dork glasses like Clark Kent (then I admitted to myself that I was just being a jerk).

Guys I wanted before we picked a guy I've never heard of:

    Riley Rieff
    Chandler Jones
    Whitney Mercilus.
    Nick Perry
    Brian Quick
    Rueben Randle

  • In reply to Waffle:

to be fair though I think the Bears did an excellent job with Alshon Jeffery though and I actually do believe that Paea will come out strong this year with Melton and make shit happen.

Picks to make the team that are on the bubble:

    Devin Thomas
    John McCargo

  • In reply to Waffle:

and Tyler Clutts. He must make this team.

  • In reply to Waffle:

    Riley Rieff
    Chandler Jones
    Whitney Mercilus.
    Nick Perry

all good. who knows what CD can be yet, but we would never have done badly with an OLmen. Never.

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

Mercilus was my pick - I'm pretty sure anyone at the draft party can remember my reaction to the Chicken Dinner pick...
"Shea who? Who is this guy? Should I know him? Do I need to reexamine my life if I can't figure out who the first round pick of my Bears is?"...something along those lines.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I believe every single bears fan alive had that same reaction... then web searched for him hit an all time high.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I didn't like it and I was told not to tell anyone until it was announced on TV.

It's too early to tell and I will love to be surprised but hey.. I am not getting my hopes up.

  • I think he'll be ok. Seems like a clutts type to me. I have no clue why we'd draft him to play MLB though... and Lach's replacement no less.

I want that hawaiian kid from ND next year.

    Manti Te'o: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkRDnxXfyKU

  • Speaking of chicken dinner, I'm tempted to go get one.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

I'd be a lot more tempted if their food was good.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

As stupid as I thought it was for the CEO of Chik-fil-a to decide he was in the social commentary business, I think it's sort of absurd for city governments to start banning franchisees, particularly since they weren't accused of actually discriminating.
OTOH, it cuts both ways. Those franchisees knew who they were getting in bed with when they plunked the money down. If they lose customers over their CEO's statements, well, that's fair too.
I don't know why he had to open his mouth - seems like a smart business guy that did something really, really stupid.
They have the best customer service of any fast food chain I've ever gone to, FWIW.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

that all said... they are now blowing up with more customers that they are losing supposedly. Shrewed, planned move?

btw... I thought right-wingers were more of the fatburger, bacon, fried hog parts kinds. Whatever.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

There is no such thing as bad publicity, right?

Chik-fil-A fries are always underseasoned. But their sauce is f-cking magic.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

thats what the marketing folk like to say. buncha fucking turds

  • In reply to MB30SD:

But they get all the cool trinkets.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

And by cool, I mean shit that goes in my desk drawer, never to be seen again unless I need to throw something.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Best line of the "If a man saying he’s proud to be married to a woman now amounts to homophobia, does that also mean that gay-pride marches are heterophobic?"

This is the side of all this stuff that the Left never seems to understand.

You all know I'm a libertarian (if anything), but how many times do you hear the Left claim that anything they disagree with is "hate"? How many times do you hear the Right say it?

If you're remotely close to objective, you have to agree that the L wins that race yo ignominy and its no contest.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

I'm more than a little objective - if you say you're a homophobe and someone says, hey, that's kind of hateful...it doesn't become a circle of shit-on-your-neighbor. Getting called on your dickishness does not make you a victim, gay, straight or indifferent..
For the record, that CEO is free to express his opinion - and people are free to not eat there because they don't like his opinion. I have no problem either way.
Like I said, I'm not sure why muni governments are getting involved. At the moment, I would say I don't understand the logic there. There are plenty of businesses with much worse social impacts that get welcomed with open arms.
The fact that his corporation donates tens of millions of dollars to keep gay marriage illegal....well, people find interesting ways to spend their money, that's for sure.
In regards to the other topic, if you think that there's not ample whining from the Right side of the aisle about how poorly they're treated and how oppressed their opinions are, then you are only tuning in to one set of code words. And that's the truth, Ruth. "Lamestream Media"? "Gay agenda"? C'mon...the "Defense of Marriage Act"?
Those are all "victimhood" memes...as if my life is impacted one iota by two chicks wanting to get divorced in five years.
    What a waste of energy...

  • In reply to SC Dave:

I agree completely with Dave from South Carolina. It's like with the Cubs. Many people now refuse to go to Cubs games because they do not want their ticket and licorice money used to make racist advertisements against President of the United States. Just because the left does not agree with Ricketts family that Barrack Hussein Obama was born in Kenya and is a Muslim, does not mean that it is hate. The left always tries to smear people they disagree with on these issues as racist. Thank You Dave from South Carolina!

  • In reply to BlitzKrieg:

Very true #17 from parts unknown. But the right does similar shit. Equating anybody with a belief that our government should spend more money on social programs, as opposed to say, the military, with a communist is just as ridiculous. The left and the right are equally fucked.

Kinda thought we'd seen the last of you.

    Go bears Bear Down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks #34!!!

But I agree with Dave From South Carolina. He makes a very important point about reverse racism. People say that the right in this country is racist just because it is 97% white and Christian. What about Allen West or Marco Rubio or Eric Cantor? Would a racist party have a black man, a hispanic, and a gay Jewish person in prominent positions? Like Dave's point, the media is just full of reverse racism against straight white Christians.

  • In reply to BlitzKrieg:

Dude - go away. This is the dumbest conversation of the last few months already.

  • In reply to BlitzKrieg:

Claiming he's a Kenyan Muslim sure is stupid and it's not a coincidence that this started with an African American President. If it's not racism that drives those memes, it's something in the same family.

And AFAIK Ricketts or his family have never made that claim, and I don't think anyone on here would remotely entertain that idea, including Dave. You might not want to put his name on that without asking him first.

Dude, you're dancing perilously close to the edge of not knowing WTF you're talking about.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

If you don't know it then it must not be true smart guy.

I don't know if Dave from South Carolina is a fan of Blitz Krieg, but Blitz Krieg is a big fan of his. I read his posts on politics and culture and I nod approvingly. He is a very smart man.

Blitz Krieg does not dance smart guy!

  • In reply to BlitzKrieg:

Did you read the article? You don't dance but you sure say stupid shit.
Dave is a very smart guy - I just happen to disagree with him on some aspects of human behavior and economics from time to time.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

I'd still eat it if it was decent. I remember when Ilived down in AZ how everyone raved about this place and when I tried it I was very unerwhelmed.

As for the fuss, I think It's ridiculous that someone can't state their opinion on a political or religious matter without being attacked by everyone.

  • In reply to ben in norcal:

In Omaha, everyone raves about that shit, too. In fact, kids would travel long distances to go get it (Sioux City, I think).

To me, it's cafeteria food. It was one of the vendors in the student union at University of Arizona. I ate the waffle fries as a last resort.

    I don't see the appeal.

  • Chicken Dinner isn't happy with the way he played, either.

    From Zaidman:

Shea McClellin: "Today, my pass rushing wasn't very good so I was kind of disappointed."

Shea McClellin: "I'm pretty hard on myself so I've got to do better than that."

    And from Michael C. Wright:

Shea McClellin was disappointed in the way he performed today. Sounded frustrated.

At least he has the right attitude about getting better...

  • Yes, this is... was... our AA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoXw17yIevI

  • In reply to MB30SD:

AA is fucking hysterical. I hope he lands with a team. My dad knows him and his family. He's a great dad and lives up around Waukegan.

  • In reply to Waffle:

I was the biggest baby born at Victory Hospital in Waukegan in August 1970. I feel bad for my Mom, because she was so little at the time. My uncle held the school record at East or West High School in the 100 from about 1966 till the mid 90's . True story.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Thanks for this, MB. That's some good shit.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Ya'll better cut these lights off!

  • In reply to SC Dave:

    welcome dave.

  • Boys, i don't know about you but I can't wait until the Hall of Fame game. I'd watch grade school football over baseball. I will watch every pre-season game for every team that is on tv. It's a right of passage as we move into the prime of the sports year. My wife can't understand why I watch other teams play preseason games religiously featuring guys that will most likely never make any squad.

The answer is simple. "It's football baby and....other sports seem gay when compared to it"

  • In reply to Waffle:

  • In reply to Waffle:

I'm right with you, it just seems kind of surreal seeing real live fb for the first time in 7 months. Thats the only reason I can justify watching these fake games down to the 4th qtr. Amen to that.

  • In reply to Waffle:

I only read about J-ball's history the other day. Wow. To really call it the World Series, it should be between the WS and Jap winners. That's the best team in the world then, no questions. Worldwide audience for that too - it would be the next logical step for baseball.

  • Artoo -

If you head down south again, see if the concession stands still hawk that $130 BMarsh authentic jersey. It's Reebok, and I heard Phil Knight just went Cease & Desist on that shit. No 2012 jerseys from any Korean sweatshop but Nike's. Reebok made a killing on Jets Tebow jerseys.

  • I agree with His-Bloginess about the inordinate amount of overreactions that we are exposed to on a relentless basis by all manner of media. Twitter, sports radio, blogs, whatever. I do enjoy the feeling I get every training camp when I hear that certain unknown or inexperienced players are turning heads. That hope that every guy will turn out to be the next Urlacher or Briggs or Hester or Brown (that was for you MB). That hope that this year things will all come together. I'm usually dissapointed. Hester is supposed to have a break out year at receiver every year and never does. But I still enjoy the hope.

I was too young in 85 to know the feeling surrounding that preseason. But I was sure at the dawn of the '06 season that we were Lombardi bound. It was a great feeling. This season feels like that to me too. I can't say that about the mid to late 90's. But every year it seems we add another important piece to puzzle. Cutty, Peppers, Marshall... Training camp and preseason are exciting lately because of hope. But they're always good because it brings our beloved Bears back to us.

The problem I'm experiencing this preseason is LACH of exposure. We got rid of cable in favor of NetFlix and now I don't know how to get my sports-fix. No Olympics, No Rich Eisen interviewing Cutty and Marsh on NFL Total Access. I don't twitter or facebook so that leaves basically this site for bears news. I know there's other shit out there but I'll be goddamned if I have time to surf multiple sites for bears news. I've been trying to read, but lately, posting hear seems forced. I don't know why. Nothing to say lately I guess. I'm rambling.

    Ramble on.

  • Case in point. This excites me, even knowing the source:

Click here to see what excites me!

  • Huh?

  • In reply to SC Dave:

My Case in point was supposed to be a link to this: http://www.chicagobears.com/news/NewsStory.asp?story_id=8939

    Fucking Gnome Code.

  • Hmmm...

Hover over this to see it change colors, for no reason!

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

Put down the matches before they fall in the gasoline that is our gnome code.

  • Doc, I get most of my Bears shit from 670 the Score, and links on this site. They have podcasts of the shows. I like Biggs from Mully and Hanley, but you can check out the other guys. There;s a description of each show, so if Bears are talked about you can figure out how to get the info you want. No commercials, and after 30 seconds you can fast forward if needed to listen to the Bears info you want to hear about. It's not too difficult to figure out.

  • Nice style sheet! Bravo!

  • Yo Doc.

  • I know its practice and all but Im liking the love Paea is getting from coaches Smith and Marinelli.. “I’m very pleased with all of his work,” Marinelli said. “One thing he shows is tremendous get-off, great pad level and he’s healthy. When you get out there you feel him, and that’s the way it should be.” and... “Playing the run, he’s got great quickness,” Smith said. “We like what he’s been able to do as far as rushing the passer. He’s just a good football player inside and we are expecting big things from him to take that next step.”... A lot of you guys are not on the bandwagon yet but I'm hoping he proves the doubters wrong and becomes a disruptive force on D!!!!!
    Packers, Lions = MUERTO!!!

  • In reply to OsosFan:

    Marinelli loves everyone.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

    Yoda don't hate.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    Correction. Hate, Yoda don't.

  • every time I see AKA Balls Ornamental i laugh. There hasn't been one time when i haven't.

  • In reply to Waffle:

    Glad to hear it!

  • In reply to OsosFan:

God knows he needs to be or we're in really big trouble on defense this year. Ditto someone at DE.

  • Totally agree with everything you wrote training camp gets thrown out the window when the real games start.

  • I have a question...

...why are a lot of divers gay?

The hurt locker is bad ass btw.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    i didn't know they were.

I do know that i've been enjoying the shit out of the olympics. Watching our boys and girls kill it in everything from gymnastics and swimming to basketball to volleyball is awesome.

  • In reply to Waffle:

I think after the whole Greg Louganis thing, it's just been the assumption.
Anyone remember him cracking his head open on that diving platform?
I remember it just reinforced to me why people weren't meant to do f-cking backflips off of reinforced aluminum. No thanks.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I used to do back flips off diving boards all the time, until ....I hit my head on the board. Could never do it right again. It's a shame no pools have high dives anymore due to insurance reasons.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

I remember our neighborhood pool in Montgomery (IL) had one when I was a kid....and that they used to, no shit, dump goldfish in it once a summer and let the kids catch them.
There is no way they would do that now. Some kid would get sick, claim goldfish shit got in their ear, and shut the place down.
And they used to throw big cakes of chlorine into the pool, like brick size cakes of it - with us swimming in the pool! How I don't have glasses, I don't know.

  • In reply to Waffle:

I'd like to enjoy Gabrielle Douglas. The olympics is all about women's gymnastics and every man knows it.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Great movie.

  • this was the guy i wanted...

this dude would have fit in perfectly at LDE...

Not giving up on Shea though. Needs to put on some more beef, and get technique down, but i have a good feeling he'll get there. A lot of DE's do'nt really show up in their first season. welcome to the NFL, rook.

  • The problem I had with the McClellin pick is that it didn't "wow" me. I just have this nagging suspicion that we got him so the Pack wouldn't. And then, the Pack got Perry so that we wouldn't get him in the off chance he would fall to the 2nd.

Once again, we were the bride's maid. Here's the draft recap

    14. DT Brockers
    15. OLB-DE Bruce Irvin
    16. DE Coples
    17. CB Kirkpatrick
    18. OLB-DE Ingram

    Then, McClellin. EH.

He just doesn't seem on the same level as those guys. It was almost an Angeloish pick where a player was chosen because his "floor" was set. Really, beginning with our pick, most of the OLB-DEs were "serviceable": McClellin, Mercilus, Perry, Jones, Hightower were all interchangeable with some experts touting one or the other. The difference is that Mercilus, Perry, Hightower and Jones are not "floor" guys, but "ceiling" players with huge upside, unlike McClellin.

If that was the case, then why settle for a 2nd tier player at pass rusher when 1st tier players like OT Reiff, OG DeCastro, or even SS Harrison Smith were still on the board? And Emery couldn't seriously swap two spots with the Bengals to snag Ingram? How much better would we all be feeling right now if we had Ingram? Or couldn't we just have traded down and picked up Courtney Upshaw and with the extra pick drafted, say, CB Jenoris Jenkins?

This whole draft was just weird. The Alson pick I loved, but the rest is all very questionable. We get a 3-4 OLB graded in the mid-20s to play DE, an "H" back even though Kyle Adams and Clutts played well, some CB who hasn't played in a year who we're going to convert to SS, and two CBs...(and need I put my MB voice? NO OLINEMEN!)

Emery was brought to build us through the draft, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but gotta say I am very lukewarm about it, at best. Like everyone else, hope I'm proved wrong.

  • I think we'll see a better draft next year after he has had a year of his scouts checking out the guys. I think Emery was still stuck with what JA had put in place...

I don't know... I'll make excuses for him now. Considering we ARE on the way to winning a SB.

  • boys..boys..boys...winner winner.."c
Chicken Dinner" just needs as "Our Boy Roy" say's some man beef...the frame is what I think E-Train was looking at.
During the season he will be rotated in and if he sacks say "FuckDodgers" will he be a bust then? no. I see this boy adding weight and then towards the end of the year he will start to gel...As for Ming the Mercilessness..all are saying he is topped out no upside..I think Shea will have a huge upside.

    ........just my .02

  • Hmm. People need to get off the rookie's back. At least wait til he sucks against the Colts before even offering an opinion on the poor bastard.

From camp : at the end of Roy's podcast he mentions how good Chris spencer is looking, he was 'stoning' guys according to Roy. "It's only practice....they ain't hittin'...." Apparently they are. Lovie is turning a blind eye to some vicious hits in practice. This is old-school training camp. They mean business for a change and clearly Emery has said "stop being a pussy in practice"

    I love you Philip Emery.

Now there's a T-shirt idea Jeff. Five percent for the Irish.

  • +100 Irish...I also like when he mentioned that E-Train has that Military attitude..I need to see your eyes when I'm talking to you LDL" and I guess a couple of times LDL was not and E-Train didn't let it go...OBR also explained that LDL is running this camp way different than he has ever done before.. EEEEEEEE--------TTTTRRRAAAAIIIINNNN!!!!!

  • o.k...o.k.....o.k...... I know it's just training camp he's in full stride....but I'm not sure in this video who's nose is deeper in who's arse....

  • just in:

  • Browns sold for a Billion bucks today.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Good. The Browns, for some reason, are a team that I want to be good. Hopefully, the new ownership group can make that happen.

1 Billion dollars. Wow. So what would our beloved sell for I wonder?

  • A fan got to ask George McCaskey and the Commish a question. So, the pussy softballs it and says "how did you get into the NFL".

McCaskey, ever the joker, says: "Not nepotism. All hard work."

Ha ha. Fuck you, George. Let's not start off being a bigger prick than Mikey, at least not right away.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Oh, and he could sell the Bears for probably 2B.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Actually pretty funny. The fact that the douche bag fan asked that question is what's most striking.

  • In reply to gpldan:

If I had two billion .... I'd buy the Bears.

  • What's the exchange rate in Thailand right now? You might be able to pull a fast one.

  • Vader comes to Double-B

Cookie gets a look at RT; Carmini message?

  • Here, here. People just want something to talk about. "Superbowls are not won in training camp". Amen. If this last season taught us anything, the first half of the season doesn't either. Regardless, pumped for the season. Bear the fack down.

  • MB.

Do we know any more about the game in December? Any ticket information? Head count?

I was on last night for about 2 hours, and only Rabbit showed up at the tail end, so we didn't bother. Rabbits often show up at the tail end. The Nitty finally gets a chance to kill and none of his homies were around to massacre. Or at least assist here and there. If anybody's available for a midday melee, I'll be home sans kids from 12:30 to 3 pacific today.

  • What are you all playing?

  • In reply to 505 Bears!!:

  • Hey, I'll jump on and play for a bit if you all need a punching bag..haha...what system do you all play on though?

  • In reply to 505 Bears!!:

ps3. Doc and I use the same handles, MBP is deadrabbit4, Shady is ShadyNuggets, and Waffle is johnnypelo.

Sorry doc. I planned on jumping on, but got into the Hurt Locker and had to stick it out. I flipped it on to my favorite scene in the movie where they meet up with that team of British special ops guys and the black guy fucks up all the Hajis with the Barrett .50 cal.

Good flick. Will be on tonight.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I'll be on ps3 tonight... not the movie will be on tonight

(check your regularly scheduled local programming for actual times and showings in your area)

  • In reply to MB30SD:

cool...i'll friend request you on the PS3 here in a few. I'll play a few as I am off work early and enjoying a few nice cool brews...my handle is wid0wmaker505...Doc, if you are on, I'll be on in about 20 mins.

  • In reply to 505 Bears!!:

better get some practice in maings. Shady is a bitch (in a...'he'll fuck you up two-time' way)

...but he's really good at MW3, so he's got that going for him.

  • In reply to 505 Bears!!:

Thanks for joining us last night, maing...was fun.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

shit was fun...I have my moments of destruction, but overall, not that good. And I allow my little brother to play when he gets his homework done....assholes..HAHA...Mic, i will get

  • I'm addicted to World Of Tanks now.

  • I'll be on tonight around 8:45pm EST...STBX gone, kid in bed, and dad on his way back to IL.
Yep, I'll be thrashing you guys in MW3 tonight.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    bring it bitches.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Says he of the f-cked up controller...

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Will I be bringing it with this team I just drafted in an ESPN league?

** (11) Irish Sweetness - Jay Cutler QB
** (14) Irish Sweetness - Rob Gronkowski TE
** (35) Irish Sweetness - Frank Gore RB
** (38) Irish Sweetness - Steve Johnson WR
** (59) Irish Sweetness - Rashard Mendenhall RB
** (62) Irish Sweetness - Matt Schaub QB
** (83) Irish Sweetness - Kenny Britt WR
** (86) Irish Sweetness - Devin Hester WR
    ** (107) Irish Sweetness - Bears D/ST D/ST
** (110) Irish Sweetness - Sidney Rice WR
** (131) Irish Sweetness - Mike Tolbert RB
** (134) Irish Sweetness - Kellen Davis TE
    ** (155) Irish Sweetness - Giants D/ST D/ST
** (158) Irish Sweetness - Earl Bennett WR
    ** (182) Irish Sweetness - Jason Hanson K

  • Other than Johnson, you are in trouble at WR. But I like Gronk, Cutler, Davis, Tolbert, and Da Bears D.

  • You would contend, if it were last season.

Kenny Britt is coming off two knee surgeries and his 18th arrest.

Mendenhall, isn't he on the PUP list and slated to start in week 6 (if he can overtake Redman)

Gronk is solid, but the Pats added a harem of receivers.

And as much as I like Cutler, the Bears now have arguably the best 1-2 punch in the back field with an excellent D which will keep games close enough so that Cutler won't go all Rodgers, Brees or Brady.

However, you get brownie points for sheer audacity.

I actually like your autodrafted team better lol

  • Mendenhall is fucked? I didn't know that. Any backup breakout jobs at RB out there anybody likes?

  • If Ben Tate is available - GET HIM.

  • Your team sucks irish nutsack.

  • In terms of the game, myself and both brothers are in.
I am not sure how we want to do the tickets. I know of five absolutes (you, me, MB, the two stooges).
I am open to figuring out hotel arrangements - I can comp us a room at one of the downtown Holiday Inns for at least one night while we're there. Just an idea. Since I'm forking over cash in September/October for a new house, I'd rather have money for the game and making it rain, as opposed to hotel rooms.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Crown probably wants to come with and bagel dog you Mike Brown Posse. Why not invite him to share your room.

  • In reply to BlitzKrieg:

    English second language?

  • And yeah, the "Rodgers is a P***Y" fantasy team is looking feeble. I got a little too tipsy, fell asleep, and slumbered through the draft, D'Oh!!! But hopefully my team of misfits can find a way to grind it into the playoffs!!

  • Asian Big Bird just reported Shea Jorts just got bagel-dogged by James Brown. Lovie saying that Shea is a "luxury" and right now should expect to be in on 20 to 30% of snaps. They're already backpedaling on this kid after only after a couple practices.

  • In reply to Crown:

But then they're going to fire him out of a cannon on the sidelines on Dec. 16th.
Chicken Dinner will impact with Aaron Rodgers at the 20 yard line and both will explode into a mushroom cloud of gibblets and feathers.
    Mission accomplished.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Hey MBP what's with your new friend? Is he still pissed about the Wheaties box?

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

If it was him, he'd be smarter than to troll me on here.

  • In reply to Crown:

If you have a link to the Love handle calling Da Dinner a "luxury", I would like that very much.

  • In reply to Crown:

you should bagel dong mike Brown posse at the Holiday Inn so he can save money for his new trailer home.

  • In reply to BlitzKrieg:

why are you here man. honestly you fucking waste of space troll. you HAVE to have more important things to do in your life than troll a bears blog (please god for the sanctity of man).

Fucking Max. get a life dude.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I was thinking Max, MrARodgers or angry Trac.

I also find out in 4 days if I'm goin sizzler. (aka SD)

  • In reply to BlitzKrieg:

i'm laughing right now because I'm trying to figure out who you are. I'm thinking Trac but you seem alot angrier so you are either not Trac or Trac that recently had something very unfortunate happen in his life.

I'm also laughing because I am assigning an awesome Borat type accent to your posts in my mind.

  • In reply to Waffle:

He has a real fondness for bagel-holing. I'm guessing it's Max.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I had an everything bagel this morning with homemade veggie cream cheese. It was glorious. Iced Coffee recipe from Pioneer woman. You'll never piss away money at Dunkin ever again.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I say Trac. Max has too big of an ego to hide his handle...unless Max fell on hard times and realized that you can't always be such a douche without the world shitting on you eventually.

  • I'm looking for the link GP. In the meantime, I nominate Blitzkrieg (aka Trac) as the leader of the new reverse racism against straight white christians sub-group on the site. Jesus H Christ. You are the largest shit for brains I've ever read on this blog!

  • In reply to Crown:

I am with David from South Carolina and Benjamin from California. I am proud to be white, Christian and straight. If that makes me racist and homophobic to you and your friends at the Holiday Inn then it is G*Ds plan. You guys go Bagel Dog each other.

  • In reply to BlitzKrieg:

    You're hilarious!
Is this part of a documentary - like that movie "Catfish"?

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

That movie really makes you feel bad. What a sad life. I thought the guy that made the movie handled it really well.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I felt really, really bad for that lady but if life is that rough, I could see how you start coloring it over with something completely different.

  • In reply to Crown:

I don't know Crown. We've had some real winners on here

  • From Jeff:

dabearsblog Stephen Paea looks great. Who drafted him, again? And Henry Melton?

Jeff, even a blind squirrel can find a hole to bagel dog once in a while. All he had to do was not suck 80% of the time. Why couldn't he just have sucked 50% of the time, it still would have resulted in multiple superbowl appearances. During his tenure Angelo squandered at least 4 to 5 years of a truly dominant defense and special team unit since he fucking fucked the offense over so hard.

  • I read Clayton's mailbag the other day and a Lions fan was whining about him picking the Bears over the Lions. I understand the homerism and it's not like we're 100 times better than them but his logic really made me laugh. Besides blowing off our upgrades in the offseason and making it sound like Leshoure and Best were going to be Payton and Sanders in the same backfield, this was the capper. " We killed them the first time we played them and if Stafford hadn't gotten injured we would have beat them in the second game."

Stafford played the whole game and that's the worst beatdown the Bears have put on a good team in a long time. There must be something in that Detroit water.

Unless we lose our composure again in Ford Field, I'm pretty sure we smoke them at home and get by them on the road. The Bears were so pissed about the way the Lions acted in that first game, I would have bet the house (literally) they were going to kill them in Soldier Field. I'm guessing Lach and Co. still have long memories of that first game last year.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I agree - if they're hanging their hopes on Best/Leshoure - they're crazy. There is no question that Forte/Bush is a much better RB combo.

  • So OT Jeff Otah got his contract terminated by Panthers. Anyone for a flyer on him at league min? Tice is suppossed to be an Oline Guru, right? Change of scenary and not having Cam Newton around has got to be motivation. Anyone?

  • In reply to BAM46Blitz:

We'd have to cut James Brown for that, no?

  • not sure how that all works. Think we'd just have to have ANY open spot right? No limit on position as far as I know.

  • In reply to BAM46Blitz:

Bam the guy has missed the better part of the last 2-3 years due to injury.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Well I know that. Just bring him into camp. If he can't cut it, then they cut him. No harm no foul.

  • In reply to BAM46Blitz:

I'm pretty sure they are at the roster limit and would have to release someone. That's not a big deal. However, if they brought him in and he got hurt again they would have to do an injury settlement. Most teams are loathe to do that.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Otah is fat, slow, injury prone. He was traded to the Jets but FAILED his physical, so the Jets shipped his ass right back to Carolina.

Keep in mind the Jets are desperate for OTs, so he must have sucked moose wang.

If I had to take a flyier on someone, McNeill is the man. When healthy, he's actually a PB. But he must be limping around or something cuz no one's even bringing him in on a try out.

  • Nice article. A bit long-winded, but, good veiws on where Da Bears are at.

  • Where the heck is Trac? There is no way Blitz is Trac. Trac never had a problem expressing his opinion, he would have no need. His last post was something about silence till training camp. If Blitz thinks he can outdo Brownie on here, he better bring a lunch cause it aint gonna happen! Its almost impossible to rattle the man unless you fuck with his Wheaties.

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

I can asure you Murph I am NOT trac. I've been around the blog for years. Don't comment alot unless I see something interesting to talk about. I coined the term "Blogfather". As far as trying to "out do" anyone, I dont get what you are referencing.

  • In reply to BAM46Blitz:

Murph's talking about Blitzkrieg, our brand new troll. Like a shiny new troll toy.

  • In reply to BAM46Blitz:

To out-do or not to out-do, but not to be out-done. Hurrah!

  • In reply to BAM46Blitz:

You be Bam not Blitz! Read back Bam, and you'll get the gist.

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

Or mess with the Blogfather about his money.

Yeah, although if it is Trac, it's freaking comedy gold on his part, like Andy Kaufman and Tony Clifton.

  • Doc, a great band at the Highway 99 tonight in Seattle. They do not disappoint.

  • From August 1st Roy's podcast :

    1. Webb remains at left tackle, although it had been reported that he would share reps with CW. He is not.

    2. After Izzy kept eating Carimi's lunch, he was benched/rested for Chris Williams. CW was not happy.

    3. Brandon Hardin is making plays.

    4. Sheamus looked better today..

    5. James Brown may be the Godfather of Tackle.

    6. Of the offense, Urlacher said : "I don't see any of that crazy motion before the snap." He talked about the offense getting to the line quicker so they can make audibles. Tice likes his audible package. On defense he mentioned Hardin's speed and play.

  • From Aug 2nd CFT podcast :

    Hester was excused from practice.

CW was playing LT with the 3s. McLellin ate his lunch. Sheamus also got the best roar of the night after a crazy pounce and grab INT on a Jason Campbell rocket.

    Armando Allen is a baller.

Sanzy is moving forward, Devin Thomas is not.

The 3s are hitting for real in practice. Pads the whole way. Good for you Lovie.

  • +1 Irish...good vid and seems to be a good assessment of "TRAINING CAMP"...

  • In reply to lobotobear:

    ROy is whack.

  • 505, nice having you on last night maings... unfortunately you are banned until you go get a headset. Talking smack (as you heard) is mandatory to play.

You started off white hot, then petered out, then warmed back up again. You had me worried in the middle there lad. Go get ye a headset then jump back on with us.

  • So I have to start this out with the true statement that, “I hate jerry Seinfeld. Hated his lame little show, hate his jokes, think he's kinda of an overblown hack.”

That said, I found this entertaining (probably all Gervais): http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=hFrrNTVTySQ#!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Awesome link. I always enjoy watching two comedians just hang. And for the life of me, I can never understand how anyone could NOT like Seinfeld! (or use double negatives)

Seinfeld's stand-up may not be up to par with "Raw" and the like, but the show is gold. Larry David is a genius. I memorize every line to that show. Larry David might provide some inspiration to the Jeff and the rest of the aspiring writers on here cuz I think he was sleeping in his car for a bit b4 hitting it big.

All you Seinfeld haters are gay! Not that there's anything wrong with that...

  • Also, on a side note and cuz it's still preseason, for any of you young bucks going on dates, taking her to the movies is prob the worst thing to do. You just sit there silently in the dark for an hour and a half, eating $10 popcorn and drinking $5 soda.

If you really want to get to know a gal, go on a 30-40 min car ride with said girl. Make up any destination, beach, park, zoo, something preferably in nature or artsy like a museum, etc. If by the end of the ride you feel like shooting yourself in the head, or are turning up the radio cuz she's that stupid and boring or has nothing really to say, finish the date amicably, get laid hopefully, then put her in your booty-call Rolodex and move on.

    You're welcome.

  • Oh, and here's the Larry David coffee with Seinfeld...

  • The Lezbo gets #8, and Cutler gets shut out of the Top 10?!?!?

Yeah, you know what --- Fuck Madden 13. Fuck it in the face.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I can't believe Eli is up to 97. Wow.

Goes to show, all Cutler has to do is win the SB, so I'm looking forward to buying Madden 14 next when Cutler and B-Marsh are on the cover with their SB rings.

  • Dinner heats up....

  • In reply to gpldan:

good to hear. Wish there was video out there of that play.

Also..."McClellin had been struggling in one-on-one pass rush drills but in live drills with the reserves at the end, he blew past starting left tackle J’Marcus Webb."

Unfortunately, there's nothing shocking about that. God damn it.

  • this is what our surf session will look like johnny: http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/diver-surprised-by-giant-mako-shark/2032w6ti?q=zach%20galifianakis&from=en-us_msnhp&rel=msn&cpkey=fc46fa03-3689-4698-9cb0-48ea50f2dccb%7czach+galifianakis%7cmsn%7c%7c

  • fuck, broke the blog again. Didn't mean to hit comment yet.

  • Dude, has happy hour started already? If so, get me a Dos Equis

  • Several bloggers wanted Lofa Tatupu last year. Falcons picked him up on a 2-yr 5.56M contract. He blows his pectoral out, and has been released.

Falcons are now without anyone serviceable at mlb.

  • god I wish happy hr had started already.

  • GP,Lager or Amber?

  • Hub picked a Chiefs - Bears Super Bowl.

I, for one, would love a Chiefs Bears Super Bowl. I don't think Casell or Charles make it through the season and Hub is fucking crazy, but that would be a great Super Bowl....

  • Ok who the hell broke the blog?
And who the hell mantioned happy hour? Now i have to sit here for another 5 hours salivating at the thought of an icy cold sierra nevada with a 2 inch cap of rich, dark guiness floating delicately atop that golden nectar known as the pinacle of beer making excellence.

  • Chiefs in the SB? Hub is smoking some crack. However, for him to pick the Bears is something of a small miracle since he's always been critical, so that ought to be a good omen.

If the Chiefs would have landed Manning, they would have been a dangerous team. Imagine Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston, even McCluster with that stud Oline and J.Charles, Hillis running the rock? Damn.

And their Ds no joke either. They got a S in Berry which would give us wet dreams, and a lot of other young guys like Dorsey Glenn, Brandon Flowers, Tamba Hali, Dontari Poe...

But no Manning will mean they're gonna hover at 8-8 which is a shame cuz that means they won't have a chance at a stud QB like Barkley next draft. Honestly, I don't know why they didn't make a move for Campbell.
