Modest Mouse was the highlight of my Release Radar. After six years off, they return with a number that reminds me of New Order, if you can believe it? “We Are Between” has a metallic, retro sound that has a ton of influences to keep you guessing with each new listen.
Caveman showcase another exciting piece of rock from their forthcoming record Smash. What starts off as a start piano ballad evolves into an experimental odyssey. I’m am really excited about their album release on July 16th.
Coldplay is back with the synth-laden, stadium banger, “Higher Power.” Their last album was really solid, and they pick up right where it left off. These guys truly have a knack for writing great pop songs.
Looks like Pete Yorn is celebrating the 20 anniversary of his debut, Music For The Morning After, with an EP called Rooftop. It contains this new single, “Rooftop” and a cover of The Smiths’ “Panic.”
Hearing Bowie’s voice in my #RADAR is still a nice treat. “Holy Holy” was something I’ve never heard before, so it was extra sweet. There is no other voice like David’s, and his swagger makes this an easy sell.
The Avalanches debut was a masterpiece, chock-full of fantastic beats, and catchy samples, none more prominent than the phrase, “That boy needs therapy,” from the song “Frontier Psychiatrist.” On several occasions, I have found myself quoting this line as the album played through, and here I am again as it gets a Mario C (of Beastie’s fame) remix. This is the second single released by The Avalanches as they prep the 20th-anniversary deluxe edition of their classic album Since I Left You. It’s due out June 4 on Astralwerks and you can snag it on 4xLP and 2xCD!
“Language Of Flowers” is your Jazz Cut Of The Week. Ulysses Owens Jr. and his big band are responsible for this contemplative piece of entertainment. Ulysses is the drummer who fronts this 19-piece outfit (the UOJ Big Band),
and Soul Conversations is his recording debut.
