Polyvinyl's "Exquisite Corpse" Is More Than A Compilation Album

Polyvinyl’s Exquisite Corpse is not just a compilation album, but a curated selection of artists from their roster that was divided into 11 supergroups, each tasked with writing an original song. All of the songs, as well as the artwork, were worked on remotely, that’s what makes this project especially unique.

Rainer Maria’s Kaia Fischer had the idea of bringing labelmates together (47 to be exact) as a way to beat Covid fatigue, and it seems to have worked. These are good songs that you’ll want to play over and over, and maybe some of these newly created bands will make a full album if we’re lucky.

This release is a true testament to the feeling of family that Polyvinyl is built on. These songs zoom in on that spirit of kinship and community. Exquisite Corpse is a real-time experiment with some incredible outcomes, creating a space for Polyvinyl’s wide-ranging talents to come together and make something beautiful during a dark time.

I debated on buying it and finally decided to, mainly because of Robert Nanna’s (Hey Mercedes and Braid) return on the song “So Much To See.” I heard his voice after Polyvinyl released this to Spotify and I had to have the album. The great part is, the other 10 songs are fantastic as well.

Exquisite Corpse was pressed on red vinyl and is still in the PV shop if you want to check it out. Here is the song list and musicians.
