Convention’s Sold Out
First time in several years
But Ernie’s missing
A Facebook post this morning from the Chicago Cubs indicated that weekend passes and Sheraton hotel packages for next weekend’s 30th Annual Cubs Convention have sold out. This will be our 8th convention, and I remember when the words “Sold Out” were emblazoned across the backs of the official t-shirts that listed the dates of previously gatherings.
That hasn’t been the case for a few years, so it looks like the team’s new personnel (Maddon, Lester, et al) or perhaps that ridiculous prediction by Sporting News (less likely) have fans excited for first time in a while.
But when I clicked through to check out the weekend’s schedule and names of players expected to attend I noticed one particular name was missing. The list of “Cubs Alumni” starts with George Altman, followed by Glenn Beckert. Missing from the alphabetical list is Ernie Banks.
Mr. Cub has been at every convention I’ve attended, and of course is always a fan favorite. I found a December article from Carrie Muskat that included Ernie’s name along with fellow Hall Of Famers Billy Williams and Fergie Jenkins – both of whom are on the current guest list.
But I wasn’t able to find any news about why Ernie might be missing the 30th Annual Cubs Convention.
Ernie Banks statue figurines will be a featured item for the popular grab bags available in the Cubs Charities room. But it looks like, for some reason, Ernie himself won’t be at the Convention this year.
The Sporting News prediction may be crazy, but you know it’s going to be a great summer for baseball in Chicago. Make sure you don’t miss any of the haiku coverage.
